Does anyone here use more than one printer with Finale?  I have two, sometimes three, and since my LJ5100 died last week, I am forced to use an ink jet until its replacement arrives.  But Finale steadfastly refuses to remember what the default printer is that's set in System Preferences.  I have even tried setting SP to the last printer used and most of the time Finale defaults to the LJ, which isn't even on or plugged in now.  Other times it will pick a different printer every time I hit Cmd-P.

Does anyone else have this problem?  It actually occurs on two separate Macs as well.

JD,

No, it works properly for me. I have an HP Laser Jet and a Canon multipurpose (my default.)

I thought it my be one Mac, but after doing a clean OS install on my MacBook Pro 2 weeks ago, and creating a virgin user account, it still doesn't stick.  Hmm.

I have a Brother and an HP. Although the Brother is far more versatile, faster and far less expensive, there are times I prefer the HP because the blacks have greater saturation. Also, I print CDs on the HP — that can't be done on the Brother.

I have no problem with Finale or any other app remembering which is which. I normally Save again after printing when I want it to remember — then it does.

Hi Mike,

The main thing I like about the HP is its robustness.  It's a fricking tank of a printer.  I've had the 5100 for nearly 16 years printing everything from scores and parts to pieces for my students.  The longevity of this printer is what prompted me to purchase a refurbished LJ5200 to replace it.  I hope it gives me even half the service of the 5100.

The Brother I have is a tabloid size printer, and I like the capability of scanning very large docs.  Altho I don't do that as much as I used to.  What bothers me is its overall cheapness.  The paper trays are fragile plastic pieces of crap that always jam.  I also don't like the manual feed slot.  One can only do one page at a time.  The manual tray on the LJ was / is fabulous.  I can stack 100 pages on it and it virtually never jams.  It also has a straight thru paper path for heavier stock, labels, etc.  I made use of that a ton.

I am starting to think this problem with remembering correctly might now be a OS/User account issue.  I was having myriad issues with my MacBook Pro about a month ago, and I took the egregious step of a complete formatting of the SSD, reinstall macOS, and start from a virgin new user account.  It was a bit of a time-suck but I'm happy to say that all the issues I was having are now gone!  (Well, except remembering the correct printer) It's a desperate step, but one I've done before and I'm not fearful of doing it again on the MacPro that is my main machine.

The 5100 is an industry workhorse — no argument there.

Mine, too. Duplex scan and print at tabloid... Yea (when you need it)!

It's been superseded by this—only difference I can see are even larger ink tanks. It didn't exist when I bought mine (I'll live).

Since the price difference is $41 and a set of tanks costs $78, it appears to be the better buy.

I pay a little extra and use HP papers—those just do not jam ever (but you can't get them in 9"x12"). Other papers sometimes jam but rarely. Even still, my HP 309a is worse in that regard.

My Brother is plastic but doesn't feel flimsy. At 55 lb, it's not a lightweight. So that my wife and I could roll it into our offices and next to our desks for large scanning jobs, I bought this AV cart. With everything wireless (except fax line and I use my HP for that), this has been most convenient.

My Brother is the MFC-J6910DW.  In looking at the links you sent, that one does appear to be less 'flimsy' where the paper trays are.  I like the fact that they are flush to the front of the printer.  The ones on mine stick out; they're always getting dusty; and they just feel cheap.  If I ever decide to dump it, the 6945 looks inviting.  I may have to check one out in person tho.
