Two staves to Grand Staff -- and one group and one instrument in ScoreManager

Windows 7, Finale v26

Hi all,

So, I have had no trouble changing a grand staff into two separate staves, but not the converse.

I have a short piece with two separate staves that show in ScoreManager as two separate instruments.

I wish to group the two into one grand staff that will show in ScoreManager as one group with one instrument (piano).

I have selected both staves, with the Staff Tool, and chose "Add Group and Bracket."
However, in ScoreManger I still see two separate staves, with two instruments.

Obviously, I am missing something.

Any suggestions are, as always, very welcome.

I do not understand why you need to do that.

But:

Have you tried the utility?

First, delete the staff group, then:

Select only the upper staff, and use

Utilities menu > Change Instrument…

Change the instrument to Piano.

Now the upper staff has been changed to a Grand Staff.

Copy the lower staff’s music into the Grand Staff’s bas clef staff.

Delete the lower staff.

Yes, that is a great way to do it.

Why?
Well, sometimes I have a piece--for example, duet for violin and cello--that is for two separate instruments that I wish to convert to piano.

With your solution, my question now sounds rather silly, but my idea was to find a quick and simple way to merge two instruments in ScoreManager into one, namely the piano.

Perhaps a better example would be taking a 4-part a capella and converting it to piano accompaniment to be added below the four existing parts.

I guess Using the Plug-in for "Piano Reduction" would be a good solution, also.

Still getting used to things :-)

Here is a similar scenario:
I wish to merge two layers into one, such as...

So, once I convert four staves (separate instruments) to two, I wish to put the layers on each staff together as typically found in hymns.

I know we can copy layer 2 to layer 1, etc, but in so doing, it will erase existing data in the destination layer.
What I would like to do is "merge" the two layers and have the stems conjoined, as in the above example.
