I trying to convert my finale file to a person that uses Sibelius. He can not open musicxml files. He is telling me he can only open .xml files.  Help!

Sibelius (recent versions) can open MusicXML files, AFAIK. The suffix is actually .xml or musicxml.

He can also install the Dolet plug-in for Sibelius, which imports/exports MusicXML files, available here : https://www.musicxml.com

The .musicxml extension indicates that the files are MusicXML 3.1 and later. MusicXML 3.0 and earlier files use the .xml extension (there are other types of xml files that are not music which can be confusing).

Finale, from 25.4 and later, defaults to 3.1 .musicxml. You can change the default or export individual files as 3.0 if you want. The drop-down menus and Help files are pretty clear.

Since 3.1 adds functionality to MusicXML, I agree with Michael Herr's post.

He can also install the Dolet plug-in for Sibelius, which imports/exports MusicXML files, available here : https://www.musicxml.com

The same goes for anyone using Finale 2009–2014.5.
