I have Finale 25 on a PC. My pastor has Finale 2104 on a Mac. I inputted a handbell arrangement for him and sent it to him for review and corrections. When he got it, he could open it, but he couldn't play it or make corrections. We have done this tons in the past with no problems what so ever. This is the first time we are having this issue. Any suggestions or advice?

Perhaps the culprit is something that happens, when the Finale document is sent, like e. g. some sort of file compression?

Thank you Peter! I will try that and see what happens. I have also been seeing a lot of comments about issues with updated OS for Mac, so I am now wondering if it isn't his OS that is causing the problem. I see you are a Mac user - what version do you recommend?

Finale 2014 has issues with Mac Sierra and later—the issues range from crashing when certain actions are taken to files that just won't open. 2014 doesn't work at all in Mojave or later.

Although the best workaround is an upgrade, there are two things to try: a) export the file as 2012 compatible. b) export as MusicXML and have the pastor download and install the Dolet 7 plugin (adds MusicXML 3.1 support to Finale 2009–2014.5).

That explains a lot. I don't know off hand what version he has, but I suspect it is Sierra. We have had issues with his older Finale files opening as well, could that be due to his OS?

He is on El Capitan 10.11.6 which should be able to handle the v25 file and the 2014. Could there be an issue with his version? Sorry, just trying to get this figured out so I can finish up some projects. He would prefer not to upgrade to Sierra or later yet - so upgrading to v26 is out of the question.

I've already given the two workarounds I know:

If you are using v.25 specific features, either of the above should work but it may not display as you entered it.

Finale 2014.5 was a no-charge update to 2014. Check Get Info: if the build is 2014.5.7098, then the version being run is 2014.5 which is the latest.

If not, it will appear as a download in the MM User Account. It installs as a separate app next to 2014.
