Arrows box in Expression Tool avoids to see and edit expressions

Hello,

in last two or three versions of Finale there started to appear the same arrows box in Expression Tool as in the Chord Tool. It sometimes avoid to see and edit the expression. See the attached file, please. I have just created a rehearsal mark and as you can see - it is covered by the arrow box. I do not see any reason, why it should be there.

The box with the arrows in the expression tool is not new. It's been there for a lot of versions of Finale. It normally appears at the far left of the screen, nowhere near the staves. The only way I was able to duplicate your image was to make the page margin and system margin both have "0" as a parameter. I would suggest you set you page margins to half an inch,that should fix your problem.

thank you for your reply.

I am afraid, that on this forum it is not possible to attach .musx files anymore, so please check attached picture.

If the page is not zoomed in, the box covers the expression.

It either has to be zoomed in, or I have to click to another bar and then click the expression again to edit it.

And as you can see, I have quite standard margins set in Page Layout.

It works like this at least on my Mac and latest Finale.

Presumably you could see the expression in Scroll mode.

Yes, just talking about time waste, if I work in page layout.

I'm a little confused by the recent screen shot you posted. To me it looks like the box with the arrows covers up the left margin. If it's covering up an expression here, then I have to wonder why you placed an expression in the margin.

I prefer to place rehearsal letters outside the staff, because there are measure numbers followed by chord changes, articulations etc.\

Especially when the opaque function does still does not work for all items (especially slurs).

If this is your personal preference,that's fine. But what you're doing by placing items in the margin is not a standard engraving practice. I engrave for US publishers and placing anything in the page margins is not allowed.

I prefer to see Chord changes not messed together with rehearsal numbers and actually any other elements in the part. I know, that engraving rules are strict about placing anything in the margins, but I prefer, when musicians feel more comfortable, when they see changes clearly.

I suspect that this has something to do with, how close to the paper edge an actual printer can go.

You do not want anything “cut off” by being too close to the paper edge.

While this was an important issue years ago, modern printers can go quite close to the paper edge.

Idea:

Set a small left page margin (not smaller than the printer can handle).

Give the systems a positive left margin, to make room for the rehearsal marks.

In that way the rehearsal marks will not get “cut off” in the print.

Hello everybody,

thank you for your time and advices. Here is an answer from Makemusic support:

"Choose the Expression Tool and then go to the Expression menu and click the item Adjust Below Staff Baseline to uncheck this option. This will close the box and you get this back by choosing this option again."

The have again proven, that Finale has the best support.
