I'm running Finale 26.2.2.294 on Windows 10.  I have tried changing the document options/grace note playback duration, but the duration always sounds the same, and the grace note sounds like it plays on the beat like an appoggiatura, instead of before the beat.  Is there another way to adjust the timing of grace notes?

The only post I found about this was: You broke what was working perfectly! Grace note or Appoggiatura.  But that did not answer my question.  Does Finale indeed play grace notes ON the beat instead of BEFORE, and why does changing playback duration not seem to change the duration?

Thanks - Brad

Does it happen to all grace notes, in all Finale documents?

Are you using Human Playback?

That other thread ended with my description of the difference between appoggiaitura and acciaccatura. The OP never got back to us so I can only assume the problem was resolved. No reason to believe differently and no evidence that this is broken, only that there have been changes.

There are many options for grace notes. Your issue can be anything from having entered as a graphic to quantization to preference options... We don't know how you are entering notes—and it makes a difference. Also, there's a plugin now that may not have been available to you earlier.

Start with the Help files—you might find the answer there or they can provide more info for us.

https://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/FinaleWin/Content/Finale/Grace_notes.htm?Highlight=grace%20notes%20playback

The latest online video I can find is for 2014, unfortunately.

If that doesn't do it, use the Submit a request link above to get MM Support involved as recommended in the other thread. Please tell us how it gets resolved as that will help others. Had that happened in the earlier thread, you would have found it—if that didn't work for you, we'd have a lot more knowledge on your situation than we do now.

I turned off Human Playback - Standard, and the grace note played before the beat.  I used simple entry.  Time signature is 12/8, I entered grace note as 8th note (no dot) half step below target note, a doted quarter note.  Without Human Playback, grace not sounds like an 8th note before beat, but with Human Playback it sounds like a 32nd note on the beat.  This is the first time I've written a grace note in Finale and now see I should explore a bit more.  I would like to use Human Playback and have grace note sound like 32nd note before the beat, not on the beat.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks - Brad

… Without Human Playback, grace note sounds like an 8th note before beat, but with Human Playback it sounds like a 32nd note on the beat …

Expand the window Playback Controls, and you will find the pop up menu Human Playback© Style.

What Style is selected in the pop up menu?

Midi/Audio - Human Playback - Standard.  When I select Custom, I do not see any setting for grace notes.  When I set the grace note duration in Document Options, the duration is honored when Human Playback is set to None, but when set to Standard, the duration is ignored.  Perhaps the grace not is indeed before the beat, but duration is shorter than I want.  Same is true for Classical Human Playback - so probably for all Human Playback.

So really, it appears that Human Playback ignores the grace note duration, and sets its own much quicker value.

Thanks - Brad

… When I select Custom, I do not see any setting for grace notes …

First you must create your Custom playback style, and customise the settings as needed.

When you return to the Playback Controls, you will see that the Playback Style is now called {Custom…}.

Next, click the button {HP Preferences}.

Click the chiclet {Ornaments/Tremolos}.

Set a lower value for {Trill & Ornament Minimum Speed}.

OK wow!  Did that.  Set speed to 4 and confirmed when Human Playback is on - set to Custom, the grace note is on the beat.  When Human Playback is set to none, the grace note is before the beat.

Thanks - Brad

Oops sorry!

I was not clear.

You wrote:

To make the grace note sound with a bigger note value, adjust the {Trill & Ornament Minimum Speed}.

In Other Words:

I was addressing the grace note speed.

To address the grace note rhythmical placement, go to the dialog box Human Playback© Custom Style.

In the pane Interpret, de-select {Ornaments & Tremolos}.

Aha - that's it!  So many settings and details.  Now it makes since that a grace note is an ornament, but I did not realize that earlier.

Thanks so much!

So, conversely, what setting will get Finale (v25.5) to play grace notes *on* the beat?

MIDI/Audio menu > Human Playback > Custom…

Select the option

Baroque Ornaments & Grace Notes

The option is by default selected in the Human Playback Style

Take a look in

Finale menu > Preferences > Human Playback > MIDI Data > Start/Stop Time:

In the pop up menu, which menu item is chosen?

In that case I can only suggest that you contact the folks in Tech Support.

You should probably send them your Finale document.

The steps I have indicated above, work for me, and the grace notes play on the beat.

I can not explain why it does not work for you.

I am unable to reproduce your problem.

The good news: You can customize grace notes to play and display just about any way you want.

I bet you can guess the bad news: You can customize grace notes to play and display just about any way you want.

Access the user manual from within Finale. In the Search field, enter grace notes. The 25 manual will list 40 results. You may need to go through a few of those results to find the issue and correct it. What Peter posted normally works.
