26.3 CRASHES when entering Chord symbols. I used this every single day. What's the fix? Can I go back a version?

Welcome to the forum!

In order to give you the best possible help we need more info from you:

1) Your operating system, and version

2) I suppose that you have updated your Finale version to v26.3 - right? From what Finale version did you update?

3) Does the problem happen in all documents? - Or is it document specific?

4) Can you provide exact steps to reproduce the crash? We do not know, what entry method you are using to enter chord symbols - and what chord symbols you are entering.

I'm having a similar issue.  Finale 26.3.0.634, Mac Catalina 10.15.4.

Finale doesn't crash when I enter chords though.  It crashes every time I go in and out of the Chord Definition Dialogue Box.  To be more specific, if I make a change to any box where I can enter a value and then click OK, Finale crashes every time.  However, If I make a change in a box (say the Suffix ID box) then click on the Chord Symbol Box again at the top of the window so that that Chord Symbol box is highlighted again and THEN click OK, it does NOT crash.  But whenever I have one of the other boxes highlighted in that window pressing OK crashes Finale every single time.

And yes this happens in ALL documents, even a fresh default document.

Peter:

OS 10.15.2

Upgraded to 26.3.0.634 from earlier 26 version on responding to a suggestion from MakeMusic.

My issue—Exactly as Jason described:

"if I make a change to any box where I can enter a value and then click OK, Finale crashes every time.

And yes this happens in ALL documents, even a fresh default document."

If Finale does not recognize a chord, I  will check "I'll do it" and select the appropriate chord ID number and whoosh

You did reboot, right? If not, do so.

When Finale crashes, do you get a crash report? If so, make sure you attach it when submitting to support through the Submit a request link at the top of the page.

If no crash report look at Console.app and run a log. It’s a computer — everything is logged.

You can try a Safe Boot — hold the Shift key when booting and log into your User account when prompted, then reboot. This rebuilds the paths and resets the caches to default.

I would download 26.3 Again and reinstall. This works more often then you think.

Thanks Mike,
I did the common things. Reboot, trash the prefs etc. and I upgraded my Catalina From 10.15.4 to 10.15.5 just in case that was the issue. I did NOT try a full Finale reinstall though.

However, I did submit this to tech support and they wrote back and confirmed that this was indeed a reproducible crash introduced in 26.3 only on Mac OSX 10.14 and 10.15. I was told that the development team is now aware of it and with any luck we may get a hot fix maintenance update for this sooner (hopefully) rather than later.

That’s all you can do, then. Hate that it happens but good that know and can reproduce the problem. Odd that I cannot on either my Mojave or Catalina Macs

In the mean time, if you do Time Machine backups, you can restore Finale to 26.2. If you’ve never done this, I can point you in the right direction or write it out.
