The Finale symbol library doesn't include the German ligature ß.  Does anyone know how to add a symbol to the library?  If not, how can I add that character into lyrics when setting German text?

It's "option-s" on a Mac if that helps.

Also on a Mac, you can hold down the S key and choose the ß from the flyout.

Welcome to the forum!

To give you the best help we need more info.

1) What version of Finale?

2) Are you using Windows or Mac OS?

You are talking about the “Finale symbol library”.

I have never heard of the “Finale symbol library”.

I did a search in the Finale online manual for “finale symbol library”, but in vain.

3) What is the “Finale symbol library”, and where do I find it?

4) You are talking about “lyrics when setting German text”.

Are you perehaps talking about the font Finale Lyrics?

The symbol ß is included in the Finale Lyrics font, in character slot #223.

Sorry for not getting back sooner, but thanks to all for the quick responses.  I'm using Windows 10, Finale 26 3.1. I'm setting a German poem and in the Lyrics Window, when you click Text, Insert Symbol, a library of symbols opens up.  At the bottom, it says Font: Finale Lyrics and Latin Small Letter S (U + 0073).  Peter Thomson suggested the symbol ß was in character slot #223, but when the symbol selection window opens, slot #223 is blank.  Is there perhaps a different set of Finale Lyrics I can use that includes that German ligature character?

Thanks.

This is not a Finale issue. Most text fonts should contain this symbol. I just googled what keystroke (Windows) would yield that character and found this:

“s-zet” (ß): Hold down “control” and press the ampersand (&) (i.e. Shift + 7) [Nothing will appear on your screen when you press this combination of keys]. Then release all three keys you just pressed and type the letter s. The “s-zet” (ß) should now appear.

Give it a try or google it yourself.

Stanley,

Scroll through that chart. I'm sure the ß is in there, somewhere. But if it isn't, by some strange lapse on the part of MM, just use a different lyric font, like Times New Roman.

You might also look into PopChar for Windows. https://www.ergonis.com/products/popcharwin/

It's handy for all sorts of rarely used symbols. I've used it for years, and wouldn't be without it.

Stanley Grill,

That font character must be missing in your Windows version of the Finale Lyrics font.

Check the version number of your Finale Lyrics font.

Version 1.3 is missing the ß character.

Version 1.4 - On The Other Hand - has the ß character.

Thanks for that, Peter. So it definitely is a failure on Finale's part, not updating the font.

Thanks, again, to all, for the suggestions.  Problem solved!  The suggestion to change fonts worked.  When I switched from Finale Lyrics to New Times Roman, the German character was in slot #223.  In Finale Lyrics, that slot is blank.  Much appreciated!
