I have a document with 12 different songs for voice and piano. I no longer have the individual songs in separate documents.  I would like to create 12 individual documents for each of the 12 songs.  Is there a way to do this?  I have tried duplicating the document with all 12 songs and then deleting the other 11 songs so I just get the song I want, but this does not work.  I have also tried copying a single song into a new document, but all the formatting. etc. gets changed.  I just want a copy of each original song as it appears in the document which has all 12.

Any help is appreciated.

Set up a new document just like the piece you want to copy. Make sure the filter is off. Copying the notes should work correctly, although formatting may be lost.

You might also try exporting a section as XML, and importing it back into Finale.

If you like, send me the document, and I’ll try it out. My email is encoded in my signature.

I may misunderstand you, but it sounds like your words “does not work” mean “does work, but the formatting gets changed” - right?

My first guess is that you, when deleting the other 11 songs, are using the Selection Tool to delete measures - right?

Do not do that.

Instead, use the Page Layout Tool to delete systems (look in the Page Layout menu).

When you delete a system, the remaining systems will keep their formatting.

Hi Peter,

I tried that but the formatting does change.  When I delete the systems instead of four systems per page, there are only three.  I could redo all this, but I'd love to find a way just to create individual documents for each of the songs and have them look exactly the way they are in the original document.  Perhaps this isn't possible.  Thanks for your help.

Without seeing the actual Finale document we can only guess.

1) Are the systems locked?

You should definitely lock all systems before you delete systems.

2) Does each song begin a new page?

The culprit could be a Page Break (which forces that specific system to, always begin a new page).

If a system has a Page Break, then Finale will display a small page icon at the beginning of that system.

Yes, the systems are all locked and each song begins on a new page with its title, composer, etc.  I don't use Page Breaks for any of the music.  By the way, when I delete the systems, the music is deleted but the song title/author/composer/copyright information is not deleted so the remaining music has the title of the previous song. I'd be happy to send you the document if you think you could figure this out.

I can not promise that I can find the culprit, but I am willing to try.

You can send the document to

Thanks to both Peter and Mike for your suggestions.  I've decided to simply update the original individual songs.  Several fonts had been changed around on my music when I updated the Finale version.  I fixed the version with all the songs in one document and was hoping to extract them individually, but it looks like it will be fairly easy just to fix the individual songs.  I wish there was a way to copy them easily into single documents, but I realize that's quite a bit of work.  Again, thank you both for your help.
