I was having this problem on my Mac system, only to realize that I needed to add the .mus extension to the file name. Maybe this helps someone? Do this by right-clicking on the the file, select Get Info, and add .mus to the end of the file name. Accept the change. After that, if this is the problem, they will open in Finale v27

A small, insignificant detail:

An old “legacy” Finale document (without a file name extension) may not display a Finale document icon.

If you add the file name extension .mus, you may still not get the correct Finale document icon.

But if you add the file name extension .musx, you will get the correct Finale document icon.
