How do I change from common meter (4/4) to compound meter (6/8) while keeping the same tempo. The Expression Tool dotted quarter = quarter does not keep the same tempo. the compound meter is much slower. But when it goes from compound back to common meter the tempo is correct. Any help out there? I would be very grateful. :)

You could add a hidden expression to change the tempo to what it needs to be.

Yes, thanks for getting back so quickly!! :) But how would you explain the change in tempo later on when it goes from 6/8 back to 4/4. There is no expression marking there and yet it goes back to the original and correct tempo. To me, that seems weird.

Because it was returning to the correct tempo of the initial section. It’s the middle that was “wrong.”

If I understand you correctly, you need to change from 4/4 to 6/8 so that

the duration af one measure in 4/4 = the duration of two measures in 6/8

- right?

An idea:

For the section in 6/8, set the “real” time signature to 2/4, but set the “display” time signature to 6/8.

Enter the notes as {not displaying} triplets.

Peter, I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand what you are asking me to do. Guess I'm a bit slow on the uptake here. :) What do you mean by "rea;" and "display"? Sorry, if I'm not getting this. :)

Peter

Wow - This looks exactly like what I need. I'm in the middle of something else right now. But I WILL try this when I'm free. Again, thanks so much for your time and expertise!!

I did what you suggested and here's what happened. The 6/8 section notated all wrong and it even added several measures. Then at measure 77 it goes back to a real 2/4 and is notated correctly. And the tempo did change It got slower, at the start of the 6/8. So I'm back to square one again. I do appreciate the help though. This whole problem is really just a playback issue. I can fix it so it's written correctly, so I may just leave it written correctly even though it plays wrong. :)  Again, thanks!

Quoting myself:

In your screen shot it looks like you missed the part with the triplets.
