For some reason, the noteheads in my entire first staff (of three) have changed to the Roman Numeral symbol.  (Noteheads in the other two staves are fine.). I've opened this file on multiple computers, and it's the same everywhere.  I've figured out how to open the symbols window by double-clicking on a note's handle with the Note Shape Tool (Special Tools window), and from there, I can change the noteheads to a different symbol.  But I can't for the life of me figure out how to just change them back to regular noteheads.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  (I've already tried the "Change Noteheads" Utility, to no avail.)

Computer OS? Finale version?

Since this worthless forum software doesn’t allow posting Finale files, could you post your file to Dropbox and post a link, so we can examine it?

Thanks for the quick reply, Mike.

I'm on a MacBook Pro running OS Big Sur 11.2.3

Finale v27.0.0.782

My client did something to accidentally change all the top clef notes to symbols - he doesn't know what, and he's very tech UNsavvy.  The file appears exactly the same on my computer as his, and all my other Finale files are fine, so this looks very much like a file issue and not a Finale or computer issue.

I'm including a screenshot here, as I'd rather not share a professional file.

Is your client also on F27? Without seeing the actual file, we can only guess.

I’ll suggest this: Make a copy of the file. Delete all the notes. Try entering some notes in the top staff. If you’re still seeing the same behavior, post that empty file, for us to examine.

Have you tried highlighting just the top staff, then from the Utilities menu choose Change/Note Heads? Select the standard filled in black note head and press okay. Do this on a copy of your file just in case.

Jeff, he said the Change Noteheads utility didn’t work. I wonder about JW Change?

Thanks, all.  Not sure which version my client is on.  Will find out when I'm able.  I created a new file with just part of a page.  Here's a link to it on Dropbox.  Let me know if you have any trouble accessing it.

You'll notice that with the Simple Entry Tool, when you hover over the top staff, the notes immediately turn to symbols.

Someone changed the staff attributes to the top staff. To fix it, go into the staff attibute dialog box and under Independent Elements, you'll see that "notehead font" has a checkmark. Remove the checkmark and all is well.

Bless you, Jeff!  I knew there must be a staff setting somewhere, but I couldn't for the life of me find it.  That was the call.

I appreciate your both helping me, Jeff and Mike.

Problem solved!
