Fingering and sometimes other articulations in Finale 25.5 files are shifted out of position both vertically and horizontally when I open them in Finale 27. Note that the fingerings are no longer centered with the notes in the example; it is like this throughout all the files that I have tried and it is often much worse.

I am even seeing slurs and tuplet numbers shifted far out of position.

I have Preferences>open>Articulation Conversion set to "Keep Positioning" and have tried it with "Ask When converting" unchecked and also with "Ask When converting" checked. In both cases the problem remains.

The files open correctly in Finale 25.5.

What am I doing wrong?

John,

Have you tried switching to other fonts included with 27? Before going into settings and Preferences, that's the first thing I would try.

Thanks, Mike. I think I have identified the problem and it is beyond my pay grade and my patience.

It seems to have to do with opening a file using the "convert" vs. "keep positioning" settings for articulations. If I open a file with "keep positioning" then the fingering positions for all or some of the numbers are out of position. But if I then open the same file with "convert fingering" the fingering positions are now CORRECT, believe it or not, even though the file was created in Finale 25.5 and "convert fingering" has no business being applied, or at least that was what I thought was the case.

Yet I believe that if I open a file with "convert fingering" immediately, the fingering is all out of position again, but I confess that I lost track of the various sequences of events and after several hours of dealing with this, my blood is beginning to boil at all the time I've wasted. I have work to do, and  will restrict myself to Finale 25.5 until my folly or Finale 27's folly is exposed.

John,

You’re not alone. Even though I have purchased and installed F27, I do all my work in 26.

Thanks, Mike. That is good to know. What is it about Finale 27 that keeps you from using it? And apparently you are not having issues of the articulation placement type in Finale 26. David Ward reported that he actually had my problem in Finale 26 at some point.

None of my work requires SMuFL fonts, and since none of my long-standing complaints have been addressed or fixed, why bother opening up myself to the new problems?

That makes sense. So I guess you are not seeing my kind of problem in Finale 26. But maybe you don't do piano fingering in your work.

It is sad when long term users are unable to use with confidence the upgrades they paid for.

Hi John R.

Being that the problem you are experiencing is caused by stacking articulations, you will encounter the same problem in v26, as that is the version stacking articulations was introduced. You should be able to change how slurs interact with articulations in the Slur Options menu.

In doing client work and personal projects since v26 was launched, I've found it best to keep v25 projects in v25 unless you want to update the files to take advantage of some of the new features.

Thanks for that information, George. That was what I have concluded; there is really no reason to move them out of 25.5. That assumes the 25.5 will always be viable on newer Mac operating systems, of course.

I made a problem report. It will interesting to see what MM says about my sample file.
