I've tried unchecking "Ritardo Before Fermatas", and it doesn't work. (Even when I clear select "Clear Selected Items" and opt to clear temp settings!) That is, it still does the ritardando.

I already figured it out. (Thanks anyway.) The only problem is, if I create the bracket as a SmartShape, there seems to be no way to affect the depth of the "vertical" parts of the bracket.
