You have to start with all the staves, and then, use the Staff Tool to hide empty staves where you don’t want or need them. I find it easiest to use the text tool for naming the parts after the split.

That may well be the problem. On a test I just ran, the fermata and rit. were ignored, if HP was set to None. Setting it to Standard fixed it.

Why (and where) are you shift-clicking? I have never found that to be necessary.
