I see Finale has a LOT of suffixes available for chords. Maj7(b9) is not one of them.

Does anyone know the reason why? Is there a more appropriate means of calling up D F# A C# Eb ?

When it asks you if you want to create it, say yes.

 

With all of the different chord naming systems, I’m not surprised if it misses now and then.

And I can’t find “7(b5) “ would you like finale to add it” I can find 7(#5). Really I was so looking forward to the new Jazz Smufl font and not having to jump through hoops to use a basic chord.

If I Recall Correctly, the chord suffix Maj7(b9) has never been included in the ready made suffixes.

You can create the suffix yourself, using the Chord Suffix Editor.

Or you can notate the chord symbol in another way - via the feature Alternate Bass:

F#m6/D

 

By The Way:

Maj7(b9) is 8 characters

F#m6/D is 6 characters

Hi Mike 

Yes I updated to 27.2 and thought I’d quickly type up a lead chart and the first chord to input was of course a Bb7(b5) to which finale replied “would you like to add it”. I found the m7(b5) so I had to duplicate that and edit it so I wasted a good 5 mins adding the 7(b5). Is there a way of adding this to my default document but to be honest it should really be there in the first place.

os12(latest), Mac mini M1, finale 27.2

Apparently the 7(b5) suffix was deliberately not installed and a conscious choice by Darcy James Argue as it is more appropriate to use the #11 suffix. Problem is my little trumpet brain finds it easier to see a (b5) as opposed to a (#11) so I will have to use the workaround.

I also think that a 7(b5) suffix is useful. It indicates that the b5 is placed in the first octave of this (simple) voicing. It is not necessarily the case with #11, which is often supported by a ninth.

I have created my own suffix library, and I have included 7(b5).
