Finale users composing for strings may experience an issue where the sound effect of the tremolo continues playing back even on notes that do not have a tremolo marking. This issue can occur due to the presence of one of two different markings, and luckily has an easy fix.
If your file contains a con sordino (con sord.) marking...
The presence of a con sord. marking before a series of tremolo notes can interfere with the Human Playback's ability to disable the tremolo effect when tremolo markings are not present. To make sure the tremolos play back only where notated, you can create a hidden senza sord. marking anywhere after the tremolos occur. Note: the hidden marking will still be visible when editing your file, but it will not appear when you print or create a PDF of your file.
- Open your file.
- Choose the Expression Tool .
- Find your notes with tremolo markings, and navigate to the point where the tremolo markings stop.
- Double-click on that first non-tremolo note and the Expression Selection dialog box will appear.
- Choose the Technique Text section.
- Find and click on the senza sord. marking.
- Choose Assign.
- Note: if other staves in this section are having the same issue, you can click the arrow next to Assign and either choose Assign to All Staves or Assign to Staves... if you want to specify which staves to apply the marking to.
- The senza sord. marking will appear with a handle (pink box) next to it, meaning it's selected.
- Right-click (Windows) or CONTROL+click (Mac) the handle and deselect Show, removing the check mark next to it. The expression will fade, indicating it is hidden. It should look like the image below.
- Repeat steps 3-10 on any other instances where tremolos appear in your document.
- Note: the senza sord. marking is staff-specific, so if you put con sord. markings and tremolos on other staves, the problem will occur on those staves as well. You will need to add senza sord. markings to those staves too.
- Test playback.
If your file contains a col legno marking...
Similarly, the presence of a con legno marking before a series of tremolo notes can interfere with the Human Playback's ability to disable the tremolo effect when tremolo markings are not present. To make sure the tremolos play back only where notated, you can create a hidden arco marking anywhere after the tremolos occur.
- Note: instead of following steps 4-7, you can hold down the "O" key, click where you want the expression to occur, and it will appear. Then, proceed with step 8.
- Choose the Technique Text section.
- Find and click on the arco marking.
- Choose Assign.
- Note: if other staves in this section are having the same issue, you can click the arrow next to Assign and either choose Assign to All Staves or Assign to Staves... if you want to specify which staves to apply the marking to.
- The arco marking will appear with a handle (pink box) next to it, meaning it's selected.
- Right-click (Windows) or CONTROL+click (Mac) the handle and deselect Show, removing the check mark next to it. The expression will fade, indicating it is hidden. It should look like the image below.
- Repeat steps 3-10 on any other instances where tremolos appear in your document.
- Note: the arco marking is staff-specific, so if you put col legno markings and tremolos on other staves, the problem will occur on those staves as well. You will need to add arco markings to those staves too.
