This error is commonly caused when a special text character (e.g. $, #, *, etc.) appears in a part or staff name that is incompatible with file naming conventions supported on your operating system.

To avoid this problem, follow these steps:

  1. From the File menu, click Extract Parts.
  2. In the Extract parts window, click to select the Prompt for Name radio button.
  3. Click OK.
  4. When prompted, choose a unique name and location on your computer for each extracted part file. Do not include any special text characters to avoid this error.

When extracting parts, if the "Generate names from" option is selected in the Extract Parts window, the program will generate a file name from an element of the score (such as the part or staff name).
