Attention Mac Users
Apple will release macOS 15 (Sequoia) on Monday, September 16, 2024.
Finale v27 is not compatible with Sequoia and will not be updated.

Mac users may encounter an error with a signature of ID= -35 that prevents them from opening or saving files. This normally happens when the computer hasn't been restarted regularly or if Finale has been left open for extended periods of time which can result in a corrupted preference file.

 

 

 

Finale's preferences will need to be cleared before you can successfully open files. Use the steps below to do so:

  1. Quit Finale.
  2. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder, or press COMMAND + SHIFT + G
  3. Type or copy & paste the following location:
    ~/library/preferences
  4. In the Preferences folder, find a file named com.makemusic.finale.fprf. Drag it into the trash.
  5. Empty your trash.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Relaunch Finale.

To avoid this error in the future it is strongly recommended you restart your computer every other day, and to quit Finale if you step away from the computer long enough for it to fall asleep.

 

If the instructions above don't resolve this issue, please contact Customer Success.

 

 

Finale will need to be closed to resolve the issue. To avoid losing all unsaved work in your documents use the steps below to export those documents as MusicXML files:

  1. Choose File > Export > MusicXML.
  2. Save the MusicXML file to your Desktop.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for any other open file.

Then, follow the steps below to clear Finale's preferences:

  1. Quit Finalewithout saving your work.
  2. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder, or press COMMAND + SHIFT + G
  3. Type or copy & paste the following location:
    ~/library/preferences
  4. In the Preferences folder, find a file named com.makemusic.finale.fprf. Drag it into the trash.
  5. Empty your trash.
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Relaunch Finale.

Then, follow the steps below to recover as much unsaved work as possible:

  1. Choose File > Import > MusicXML.
  2. Select the documents from your Desktop and choose Open. A new copy of your score will be created.
  3. Use the MusicXML score to Copy & Paste any changes into your original document.
  4. Save your updated file.

To avoid this error in the future it is strongly recommended you restart your computer every other day, and to quit Finale if you step away from the computer long enough for it to fall asleep.
