You may find when turning on Finale’s metronome with Click and Countoff, you are unable to hear it. The following are some common things to check in this situation.
The MIDI/Audio > Click and Countoff dialog box allows you to choose your metronome settings.
- Select “When Recording” from the Click dropdown menu to hear it only when recording with HyperScribe.
- Select “Always” from the Click dropdown menu to hear it both during regular playback and when recording with HyperScribe.
This dialog box will also allow you to select your preferred Metronome sound:
There are two primary sources for the click sound. We recommend that you match your click source with your preferred playback device selection:
- Finale Click: A VST/Audio Units sound that will have the same output as MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > Audio Setup. Use if playing Finale through VST/Audio Units (i.e. Garritan)
- MIDI Note: This lets you specify a specific MIDI sound for the metronome click. Use when playing Finale through MIDI.
If you are using Finale Click, then test that your MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > Audio Setup gives an audible test tone when you click Test Audio Output. If you are unable to hear the test tone, try selecting a different Audio Output source and test again until you hear the tone.

If you are using MIDI Note as your beat source, check the setting in the SoftSynth Settings dialog box. To get to this dialog box:
- Choose MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > MIDI/Internal Speaker Setup (Mac)
- Choose MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > MIDI Setup (Windows)
Here, you will want to ensure that your preferred output is selected:

You may also be using the metronome to record with HyperScribe. When you are unable to hear the click then, check HyperScribe > Beat Source > Playback and/or Click to ensure that your Start Signal for Recording is set to None (Record Immediately) so that the countoff begins as soon as you click your desired measure.
