I doing a SATB choir arrangement and in spots that have 1 note I want 2 stems to indicate that the alto and soprano both sing that note. Also I may want to have all of the 2 part harmonies (alto + soprano) to have independent up and down stems for clarity. I've already transcribed the parts. Windows 10 and FInale 2012c

I would explode the dyads, and move the lower part to Layer 2.

In Other Words:

Use layers.

Upper part in Layer 1.

Lower part in Layer 2.

You may think that you want one note to do the job... Realy you want two notes of identical pitch, one sung by each part.

Peter gave you the way we all do it. You can specify stems-up for one layer and stems-down for the other. They sort of default to that but Layer 1 won't always behave.

Thanks for the suggestions. I found an easy way to do this for just a few notes. Use the Special tools - the Double/Split Stem Tool. I just clicked on the note and some squares appeared, I clicked on the square below the note and it added an extra stem

You can: put the notes in different layers, then choose the direction of the stems by choosing the note and clicking L. this reverses the direction of the stem.

(I hope Gerry has not been checking back here every few days for the past few years in hopes of a solution.)
