I am working on a big band chart for a client and he has his own, specific way he wants his chords notated. I try to honor his wishes and can usually figure out how to create what he wants with a chord symbol.

I work in the Broadway font for notation and for text. Here is the chord symbol in need to create. This one happens to be a B diminished chord with a major 7th. He indicates it with the circle symbol (diminished) and a small triangle symbol for the major 7th. When I try to create this triangle-shape, I cannot find it in the shapes when I try to design this chord?

I can find a triangle shape in the character map for the Broadway Font. How do I get that into my chord design shapes, when I try to create what is needed.

Thanks for the information.

Running a Windows 10 desktop with the very latest version of Finale.

Denver Seifrid,

Your description of the problem is hard to understand because you are not talking “Finalespeak”.

You wrote:

Are you saying that you are looking in the dialog box Chord Suffix Selection?

Or are you in the dialog box Chord Suffix Editor?

Peter.....Sorry, but I agree. I was not very clear on what I was trying to communicate to those who might try to assist with my problem.

1. I am in the Chord Suffix Editor

2. When I select Symbol Selection, I cannot find a triangle-shape. I need my jazz chord to have the Chord............B dim with an added major 7. The arranger I am working with simply uses a B with a small circle and a small triangle shape after the "B". He is working in pencil, on his score. He would like me to re-create this in Finale.

I guess I could always create a Text Expression and use it for that B dim add major7 chord. I know I can get that triangle from the Broadway Character Map.

Thanks for your assistance, Peter.

Denny,

What font have you set in the Chord Suffix Editor?

- Broadway Copyist?

- Broadway Copyist Text?

When I (in the Chord Suffix Editor) set the font to Broadway Copyist, I have the triangle in slot #177.

I have always found it infuriating that there are so many different ways to type a delta symbol (∆) in Jazz fonts. Sometimes it works with a capital J, sometimes with @, sometimes option-j works, sometimes it requires the Chord Suffix Editor. It is one of the most important jazz symbols but is often not available without lots of extra clicks. I use v.27.3 on multiple Macs. It different on each of them. I've wasted a lot of time on professional scores and parts dealing with this. Not sure what the logic is on making folks have to go to the editor to write such a common chord symbol.

The old Jazz font is not owned by MakeMusic and will never be updated beyond some compatibility issues. The Broadway ones are.
