I'm doing my part as rhythmic notation with chord symbols. In some areas I feel like the guitar playback is pitched an octave too high: it sounds terrible. Is there any way of altering this other than writing out the part in full, for which I don't really have time?

If I understand you correctly, you are talking about the playback of chord symbols, right?

You can edit the playback of the chord suffixes so that they sound in a lower octave.

Hi Peter,

Correct. Would you be able to point me to where I do that?

The playback of chord suffixes is edited in the Chord Suffix Editor.

When you are in the Chord Suffix Editor, click the button “ Set Play…”.

In the dialog box “Suffix Keynumber Offsets” the suffix notes are defined as intervals measured in half-steps from the root.

An example: ‘4’ means 4 half steps above the root (= major third).

To get lower pitches, use negative values.

An example:

To get the major third an octave lower, type ‘-8’ instead of ‘4’.

Then to get everything an octave down, would it be -12 for all entries?

And is that just for the suffixes, not the root?

Exactly!

Also, be aware that Finale treats each and every chord symbol by itself;

Finale does not consider any voice leading between the chord symbols.

This means that you get lousy voicing in the playback of chord symbols.

To get good voicing, disable playback of chord symbols (look at the bottom of the Chord menu), and instead create chord playback in a hidden layer (you could e. g. hide Layer 4).

Alternatively, you could try adjusting the volume or tone settings on your guitar to see if that helps mitigate the high-pitched sound during playback.

Bridget, this post is seven years old. Don't you think the poster has moved on, since then? And besides, that, your answer is not correct...
