New to Finale and having problem with deleting a repeat barline  which I put in in error. I've tried following the instructions to select the repeat barline icon  then 'click on the handle and press delete', but nothing happens. What am I not doing?

Also, I cannot find any mention of Double Bar lines i.e. to end a piece.

1) To edit/remove a repeat bar you must be in the Repeat Tool.

When you are in the Repeat Tool, context-click on the Repeat Bar’s handle.

In the context menu, choose “Delete”.

2) A document can {by default} end with a so called “Final Barline” = a thin barline and a thick barline.

It is a document setting.

Look in

Document menu > Document Options > Barlines

Look for the option “Final Barline at End of Piece”.

To set a specific (right) barline in a measure, switch to the Measure Tool, and double-click the measure.

In the Measure Attributes you can choose a (right) barline for the measure.

The so called “Left Barline” will only show when the measure is beginning a new system.

As Peter says, a Final barline closes a piece. A double is most often used at a change of section, and sometimes key or time signature.

Thanks for this, but what does 'context-click mean? I tried left and right clicking on the little square which appears just below the repeat sign I want to delete, but nothing happens.

Ignore previous - I've got it! Thanks, Finale . Getting the hang of this programme is a struggle but I guess it gets easier...?

Looked in Document menu but only two options : Font and Pitch.

In that case I suspect that you are not using the “full Finale”, but rather one of its smaller siblings (PrintMusic, SongWriter, NotePad).

The smaller programs are basically the “full Finale” with some features removed -

Ya gets what ya pays fer!

Select the (desired)  final measure by right-clicking with the Selection Tool (or whatever the Mac equivalent of right-clicking is). That should pop up a "context-menu" allowing you to select Barline > Final to get a final barline or whatever kind of barline you wish (within reason)..

You can also get this selection by using the Measure Tool right-click to Edit Measure Attributes.

You can also just delete all the extra measures in your piece. Then the final barline should appear automatically on the final measure.

Since Jude points out that the only options in the Documents menu are (Default) Fonts and (Display in) Concert Pitch, the conclusion is the program is NotePad, which lacks Measure Attributes. In fact, NP doesn't even have a Measure tool.

So, getting back to Jude's original question, now that we know it's NotePad: You don't have any barline options except normal, forward or backward repeat, and final, which will be put at the end automatically.

Jude, please add the operating system, program and version you are using to your signature, in the user control panel. This will save everyone a lot of time and frustration!

Many thanks for this Mike. Now I need to delete the extra measures, so that Finale Notepad where the piece ends and gives me a final bar line. One other question: How do I edit the Title of the piece? Or do I have to upgrade to do that?

Click in the first empty measure, Shift-click in the last measure, to select all of those empty measures.  Delete. Measures-B-Gone.

For the title, choose the Text tool (the T in the main tool pallet.) You will see a handle over the title. Double click the handle, select and delete the placeholder [Title], enter the new one. Or, when you are setting up the score, enter your title in that first screen.
