I appreciate everyone's input into the question I posed yesterday.  I understand that Finale has removed the scanning/PDF import functionality in its latest release (and will do so going forward) and that they've done this to "protect musicians' rights."  So my questions are these:

1.  Does SmartScore X2 Pro offer full scanning and editing capability?  Or is it somehow limited now along with Finale's efforts to protect musicians' rights?

2.  If purchasing SmartScore X2 Pro adds all of that functionality back into the software, and this software is directly linked to on the Finale website, how is this different than having it included in the Finale software?

Does SmartScore X2 Pro offer full scanning and editing capability?<

Editing, yes. Scanning depends on the OS. Win or Mac?

SSP instructions for the Mac are outdated and assume a PPC—that's ok, I can point you to the correct instructions. Beginning with OS 10.8.2, scanning on the Mac is far superior to the SS method which really hasn't worked since OS 10.4.

>If purchasing SmartScore X2 Pro adds all of that functionality back into the software<

No — .tiff import is gone in 25 but you don't need it.

SS Litte was extremely limited in functionality. No lyrics, few bar lines, fewer expressions etc.

SSP was always an upgrade to the original SS Lite that was bundled w/ Finale. Unlike Lite, SSP allows you to export as MusicXML In addition, it handles lyrics and a much greater range of expressions, bar line types etc. that Lite never could.

Music-to-XML is the product that was to have been included with 25 but was dropped before release. Even that doesn't do the actual scanning. Again, that's ok. There are plenty of ways to acquire the scan. The ways built into the Mac OS are quite good.

So what is the process for scanning on a Mac?

Image Capture.app is what you are looking for. You can access it directly in the Applications folder or through System Preferences/Printers and Scanners. Using it is fairly intuitive. The Apple support page is here if you want a long, overly complicated explanation:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204790

Once you get the hang of it, it's quite easy.

Although this is how it's supposed to work since OS 10.5, there were many problems that weren't fixed till 10.8.2 (I worked on this with Apple).

Musitek's instructions talk about TWAIN drivers, incompatibilities with HP scanners and most all-in-ones. Ignore that nonsense as it doesn't apply to Macs capable of running OS 10.6 or later. Musitek should have fixed those instructions a decade ago. http://www.musitek.com/scanningnotes.html

These instructions are better. Again, ignore any reference to TWAIN drivers as they no longer apply to the Mac OS. http://www.musitek.com/HP_Mac_Scanning.html

This shows Black & White. On an HP scanner, that is greyscale which is what SSP prefers. Whatever scanner you use, you want greyscale — thousands of shades (not 16), whatever it's called.

But what I understand you saying is that the SmartScore Lite version won't work at all any more on Sierra? I have no options to recognize or anything on my Lite version.

SmartScore Lite will still work. You import the score through the scan dialogue, it converts it to XML, and opens that in Finale. You have no options to do anything, and will have to find and correct the errors in Finale.

If you want to have the ability to edit the scan beforehand, you need one of the SmartScore Pro versions.

That's in 2014.5 or earlier. Finale 25 removed all SmartScore capabiities.

Well, no, I can't use SmartScore Lite since it won't recognize my scanner. And since there are no options for "choosing Recognize" to use a pdf then I'm sunk. Unless someone can show me what I'm missing!

As Mike H said, you use the Image Capture app, which you already have on your Mac. Image Capture should recognize your scanner. Scan in greyscale, 300 DPI, and save the file as a TIFF.  Then, you import that into SmartScore Lite.

Ignore the instructions that were written for OS 10.5 and earlier (they're just as bad for SS X2 Pro) and TWAIN.

Image Capture.app is how you scan on a Mac since OS 10.6. It works great since OS 10.8.2. If your scanner supports wireless, so does Image Capture.

You can also scan with Preview.

Just another way to “skin the cat”.

Okay, let's try again. Capturing an image of the music is not the problem. Getting it into SmartScore Lite is. The only way I can use SmartScore Lite is through Finale. The only way to import into SmartScore Lite through that interface is to scan. I cannot find  any option to find a file and recognize it, period.

Mike Rose, just what in the dialogue allows me to import the scanned file?

Yes, 2014.5 or earlier. It does not work with Finale 25.

The only way to import into SmartScore Lite through that interface is to scan

"That interface" is Image Capture.app and it is part of the Mac OS. Scan to Grey Scale 300-400dpi.TIFF. Grey Scale may be called something different on your scanner—HP calls it Blank and White (really, what other scanners call B&W, HP calls Text).

I cannot find  any option to find a file and recognize it, period.

The Help files of whatever version you are using should tell you what to do from there. In 2014.5, it's under File>Import>TIFF Files...

Again, this does not work in 25. 25 imports .xml and .musicxml only

If the results are unsatisfactory, you have other options but the good ones are paid. These convert scans to MusicXML.

Barry,

I believe it would be File> Import> TIFF file...

Barry,

I have unlinked SmartScore Pro from PrintMusic, so I can give you better guidance, if you still need it.

Send me an email to wawoodman at aol dot com.
