Every time I open Finale 2009 on my new Samsung tablet with Windows 10, it stalls with a window titled Windows Installer and stating “Preparing to install ...” It sits for quite a while and then states installation failed, asking me to cancel or retry. I select retry and then Finale opens and works, but it always takes a while to get to that point.

Maybe it's just me, but I often wonder why people are surprised when an almost 10 year old product doesn't work well in a new OS…

Mike,
I was not surprised, as I design websites, but was curious. I am old school, living in as 1940 house and driving a 250,000 mile car, so I like to get the most out of my purchases. I will upgrade. Thanks.

I did. The problem is worse now. I cannot get Finale to open. I could not attach a screen show, but this is what it said.

The ‘Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO’ audio device (ASIO) is taking a long time to initialize. Do you want to:

-Continue waiting
-Quit without disabling this device type, or
-Disable this device type and quit Finale?

Disabling the device will prevent ASIO devices from being initialized when Finale is started.

Boxes for selection: Wait, Quit Finale, Disable device and quit

Let me know what you think.

The obvious first step is to restart your computer; I imagine you have already tried that.

The second step might be to reinstall Finale.

Once you can get Finale to open (with or without the audio engine) you can start using MIDI/Audio > Device Setup > Audio Setup and your Windows 10 > Control Panel > Sound utility to try to work out any conflicts with MIDI driver(s).

(I had problems getting the audio drivers straight when I moved Finale 25 from a Windows 7 to a Windows 10 machine even though Finale had worked fine before. This may have been related to also having Dorico/CuBase on my machine using different drivers though.)

Thanks. The help staff recommended selecting "disable this device type and quit Finale". It worked.
