hello everyone,

Since this morning, all of the sudden (after years of working perfectly fine) my finale 2012 started crashing when I click on the expression tool. I have a mac OS10.6 (I know, I should update...). I saw on different forums that it happens on windows, but I can't find information how to solve this on mac 10.6 and finale2012. I'd really appreciate any help!

and, sorry another side question: which operating system do you recommend to work well with finale 2012?

thanks a lot!

Sorry Katarzyna, I don't have a solution.  I just wanted to also add that I am having the same problem with the expression tool on OS10.12 running Finale 2014.  It's extremely frustrating that a program that cost several hundred dollars is rendered virtually useless with this one glitch.  Hopefully someone out there has a fix!

2014 crashing on OS 10.12 while using the Expression Tool is well known. The fix is to update.

2012 crashing on OS 10.6? That's strange and doesn't make sense. The most likely cause is a conflict with a 3rd party expression. Here are the system requirements:

MACINTOSH®: G4 or higher recommended. OS X 10.7, 10.6, or 10.5. Mac Power PC or Mac Intel. 700MB hard drive space required for software and user manual.

If there's a crash report, it needs to be examined by someone who knows how to read one. If no crash report, Console.app examines the system in real time.

hi there,

thank you both for your answer. Thomas, I hope updating will help (as Mike suggests). It must be super frustrating!

It's very strange, I was reading through multiple forums and somewhere I found an information it had to do with corrupted preferences files. I found a folder in user/library/preferences/ Finale 2012 preferences, and below a small file Finale2012UpdateCheck.txt . I just opened it. No idea whether it was this or something else, but apparently something helped. Could that be it? To my surprise the problem disappeared, although several times yesterday  it was persisting even with restarting computer, copying the content into new file etc...

Thank you for your recommendations as to updating.

best to both of you

Katarzyna

Whenever I select "Check for Updates" I am routed to a window that says "New version available...."  In other words, the only option I am given is to UPGRADE for $149.   How do I simply update?  I've already purchased two upgrades for my original Finale purchase and really find it frustrating to be spending so much money just to keep the program running.  2014 should still be supported in my opinion.

We have two threads running.

The last version of 2012 is 2012c. It addresses an issue with Expressions. Download it here:

http://www.finalemusic.com/updates/

If this does not help, no one is going to have a clue without reading the Console log or crash reports.

2014 is supported. 2014.5 is the version you probably should run in Sierra (and it is not perfect). When you download 2014 from your MM account, you are actually getting 2014.5. It will install in your Applications folder next to 2014 and the icons look nearly identical so make sure you are running the correct version. If it works, trash 2014. There are many (many, many) threads on this. MM has tech notes and bulletins on this. Google, likewise is your friend.

Some Sierra issues were not fixed till 25, a paid upgrade. 2014 is now over 3 1/2 years old (November 2013) and received a major update to 2014.5 two years later and that one was free. The Mac OS has been updated 3 times since then. In case you are not a longtime user, before 2013, MM/Coda released a paid upgrade to Finale every year. MM has promised another no-charge update to 25 this year — besides MusicXML 3.1 support, I have no idea what else it will have.
