I'm trying to write some simple music for beginners and it's now all in the treble clef. How do I make it a grand staff with notes below middle C in the bass clef?  Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

If I understand you correctly, your document is a 1-staff document where the single staff uses the treble clef, right?

I would use the Staff Tool to add an extra staff, then use the Staff menu to add ad staff group of the two staves - choosing the “curly brace” for the new staff group.

(Staff menu > Groups and Brackets > Add…)

Use the Clef Tool to change the lower staff’s clef to bass clef.

Thanks for answering!  I don't see 'Groups and Brackets'--maybe that comes with a newer version of the program?

Anyway, I DID get a grand staff under the treble staff (sort of a vocal/piano thing).  That would work, but the music is still up on the treble clef.  When I try to drag and drop the music from Sonar, it just goes into a new file, also with just the treble.

Now that I can at least get it to be a Grand Staff, I could enter the bass clef notes by hand, but I'm hoping there's a way to just pull it over from Sonar.

Any ideas?  And thanks again!

You might find it simpler to add a grand staff (Piano) beneath your single staff and then to copy the notes to the  grand staff before deleting the single staff. Then you can edit the grand staff to split or add any notes you like.

Yeah, I may have to do that.  I'm hoping I can figure out how to delete that single staff when I'm done.  :)  Thanks a bunch!

Re: groups... With the staff tool, context-click any staff handle or select a group of staff handles and context-click any of them. In the menu that appears, you will see "Add group and bracket..." But you won't need to do this if you simply created a piano grand staff as J Adrian suggested. Also take note of the options on the bottom of that menu...

I don't use Sonar, so I can't walk you through that, but what kind of MIDI export options does it offer you? What I'd do is export MIDI of the whole project, drop that MIDI file into Finale, and then format and edit from there, most likely copying into a pre-formatted template (or in this case, your document with the grand staff already set up).

Thanks.  Yes, I prefer playing it in Sonar and editing it there, then I can simply drag the piano roll to Finale and finish it up there.  But like I said, it wants to go to just treble clef.  Anyway, I did find a work-around.  I believe my copy of Finale is so old I don't have a lot of the new bells and whistles.  If I keep messing with it, I may have to bite the bullet and upgrade.  Thanks again!

I don't know if PM 2009 lets you set MIDI Import preferences but, if it does, that's where you change this to the way you want. It should, I think.
