My 2017 iMac is stuck at Ventura, and I would like to go to Sonoma. I have seen a couple of posts installing it on an external SSD, which I have, a 1TB Samsung T-7. Apple suggests buying a mini, and using that as the drive, which is certainly an option, but I'd rather keep the $700 in my pocket. I'm sure you understand!

And before somebody asks why don't I just buy a new iMac:

  • They have reduced the display size from 27 to 24 inches
There are fewer ports for peripherals
I'd be paying for a new keyboard, which I don't need (I use the extended keyboard,) and a Magic Mouse, which I don't like
I'll be 75 next week. I don't even buy green bananas

There are a lot of problems installing Sonoma on an external (don't!) but I'm pretty sure that, if you can't install it on the System drive, it's a moot point. The only 2017 iMac that can run Sonoma is an iMac Pro. I had it running on mine before selling last October. The 2019 and 2020 iMacs can run it, too. Like the 2018 Mini, the 2017 iMP and 2019/20 iMacs have the T2 chip inside. No word on when the macOS in these will no longer be upgradable.

I can make suggestions, yes, based around the M1 or M2 Mini. LG makes the 27" 5K Retina Display available as a stand alone monitor—exact same screen that Apple uses and it includes a microphone, camera and speakers. Although you can use it with a 2018 Intel Mini, might as well get a used 2017 iMP, 2019/20 iMac if going that route.

You know how to reach me. Let's talk.
