Hi yall,

Computer: MacBook Air, M1 chip, macOS 11.5.2

Finale: 27.4.0.144

Been running into this bug for years and it still doesn't appear to be patched.

Not sure what triggers it, but it fairly frequently (maybe ~50% of the time!) a notehead will not change to a selected symbol.  My workaround right now is to create a note in a different part of the music, change the notehead there, and then copy it into place.  Sometimes the notehead of the new note will not change either, which kicks off the maddening process of putting new notes all over my music until one of them does not bug out and I can copy it into place.

See attached image for how random this can be - in the top staff of this score, I wanted all four Bb notes on the middle line to be 'x's. Only the third notehead changed to an x and I had to copy it into the other 3 locations.

Thoughts on what triggers this bug?  Less clunky ways to fix it?  An impending patch 🤞 ?

Thank you!

This kind of task is easy to do (even per layer) with a plug-in : JW Tools -> JW Change -> Noteheads -> Shape (+ select a layer). Try it and see if it performs better.

Besides MikeR suggestion it can depend on what font you have selected. If you have a font that doesn't have the shape it won't change. Finale has bugs for sure but this isn't one of them.

Have you tried using:  Utilities Menu --> Change --> Noteheads...  ?

Select your note heads and then select this menu item.  If you have multiple layers and you are wanting to change the noteheads in layer X, go to Document --> Show Active Layer Only - then display the layer you wish to change.  I only use the "Special Tools" method if I have a single notehead in a chord that I want to change.

Ernest is correct about possible font issues - there have been issues when attempting to combine SmuFL and non-SmuFL font characters for notation elements. Seems that most have the best luck when sticking with all SmuFL or all non-SmuFL for notation elements.

Also - your posted link goes to an all-black web page on my system.
