When I open Finale (an old version) I get Error code 7.  After I Reload MIDI driver, I am told that "one or more MIDI devices are not responding."  Almost all the menu options are greyed out; I can't even get in to find my version under Help/About Finale.  When I load a file and try to play it, I just see the long green arrow pointing down across the score, but it does not move when I click playback.  I have spent many hours trying to solve this, to no avail.

Welcome to the forum!

We need more info:

1) Please specify the steps you’ve already taken (to solve the problem), so that we can rule out things.

Have you tried quitting Finale, and launching it again?

Have you tried trashing the Finale Preferences file?

Have you tried re-booting the computer?

2) Windows Finale or Mac Finale? - What version of Finale? (perhaps v27?)

3) Regarding your Finale playback:

Open the Finale document, and take a look in the MIDI/Audio menu.

What option for Play Finale is selected? - perhaps Play Finale Through MIDI?

Error codes 7 (Windows) and -7 (Mac) are not Finale errors, actually. They are messages from your OS telling you that Finale cannot find something it needs to see. Sometimes, something is missing such as a file on an external drive that did not wake from sleep. It can be a corrupt pathway or a component no longer supported… The list of possibilities is quite long.

Other than that, As Peter indicates, we need a lot more information.

You can find your latest version of Finale listed in your MakeMusic (FinaleMusic) Account.

In my particuler case - which not sophisticated - the missing component is a midi device, either a microphone or a midi controller (keyboard) connected via usb. this happens when other piece of software is competing for the device, which in my case is a DAW.
