version 25 on Windows

For some reason, on my orchestral scores, "group 6, group 12" etc. is showing up right next to the instrument abbreviations in front of the  instruments. It has something to do with my staff  group and bracket. If I delete the group thing, then the bracket for my woodwinds, for example, goes away. How do I get rid of the group thing and still keep the brackets for the woodwinds, brass, etc.?

Don't delete the groups. If you want to hide the group name, it can be done via Staff menu -> Groups and Brackets -> Edit.

In the window that appears, uncheck "Show Group Name". Do it for each group.

I do not recall whether Finale v25 had this option, but v27 has the option

 

Staff menu > Show Default Group Names

 

De-selecting {Show Default Group Names} will hide the “generic” group names (like e. g. Group 6, Group 12, &c.) on un-named groups.

The group names on named groups will not be affected.
