Hello, 

I'm using 2014.5 Finale Printmusic.  I finished putting in a violin arrangement, and tried to use the lyric tool.

I choose the little quill in the bottle.  Every time I try to type in one measure, for example, Oh Lord my, it will skip the word “my" to the next measure.  I want the lyrics “Oh Lord my” to stay in one measure, but it jumps to the next measure.  Perhaps it’s because it has a quarter rest and a dotted half note?  ...and not quarter notes to attach itself to?  
When I click on the “Lyrics” I have these checked:  Type into Score, Ignore Syllable Edge Punctuation, and Use smart hyphens and word extensions.  
Any thoughts as to what I’m doing wrong?

If you want the vocalist to sing three words, you need to have three notes to attach them to. It sounds like you only have two. You could get around this with a hard space, but it will help if you show us a screenshot of the measure in question.

 

Or, do you have two layers in that staff?

You can do what you want. Like MikeR, I want to see a screen shot of the measure.
