Finale 25.5 - Windows 7 - 16 Gb RAM - 2.3 GHz CPU

First you need to know I'm musically challenged in every way. Now my problem; I am using 4/4 beat, and many measures are 3 quarter beats, then a tuplet in the last beat consisting of a quarter note and eighth note. I haven't found the trick despite the manuals and Youtube. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks! Kim

There are several ways to do it in Finale.

One way:

Speedy Entry Tool.

Entry string:

5 (entering the first 4tr)

5 (entering the second 4tr)

5 (entering the third 4tr)

Ctrl-1 (opening the Tuplet Definition which defaults to 3 Eighths in the space of 2 Eighths)

Return (OK!)

5 (entering the triplet 4tr)

4 (entering the triplet 8th)

Simple entry:

numberpad 5-enter first quarter note, second note, third note, fourth note (which is the first beat of the final triplet.)

Alt-9, to enter tuplet definition frame. Set to 3 eighths in the space of 2 eighths. You might want to check this as the default, if there are many identical tuplets in the piece. OK.

numberpad 4-enter eighth note.

With the triplet defined as the default, after you have entered the first quarter note of the triplet, just tapping 9 will set the triplet for the final eighth note.
