I need a 3/2 time signature.  How do I find it or make it?

Right click on the measure that starts your 3/2 time - select "Time Signature" - then "Edit Time Signature..."

Change the beats to 3 and change the quarter note to a half note.

Here is a link to the on-line manual that explains time signatures. This can be accessed from the HELP menu in Finale:

Sometimes it is necessary to transpose music.  I scan it with SmartScore Pro2, but often, the time signature goes to 4/4 and will not change no matter what I try.  This does not happen every time, but it happens most of the time.

This is a known issue with scanning.

Rather than trying to fix the document, it is simpler to export as MusicXML, and import the MusicXML into a new document.

Are you editing the ENF in SmartScore, and changing the time signature, there?

I do very little editing in Smartscore, as most of the things can be edited more easily for me in Finale (probably due to my many years of experience with Finale.    Sometimes, I rescan in Smartscore, as it is easier to scan with a higher resolution than it is to correct all the scanning errors.  I truly wish that the scanner was more accurate.   For that matter, is there a way to import from a sound file?

… is there a way to import from a sound file? …

Creating music notation from an audio file is a very complicated computer task.

There are some programs for that, but they can only reliably “translate” very simple examples where you can hear only one pitch at a time (monophony).

The computer task gets way more difficult when there are multiple pitches sounding at the same time.

Generally you will have to use the “wetware” between your ears.

You can edit the audio file, and slow it down, to better hear what is going on.

And you can let Finale play the audio file along with the Finale document, to check for errors.

Lawrence,

I find that correcting most of the errors is MUCH quicker in SmartScore. Of course, that means that I had to learn SS as well as I know Finale. I'll be happy to work with you on improving your SS chops. If you would like some tutoring, or just want to talk about it, you can contact me at wawoodman at aol dot com.
