I just upgraded to Mojave, and I had a major issue with SmartScore. When I select a tool, the cursor does not change, showing what tool is chosen. It still works, but you really have to pay attention.

SmartScore has acknowledged the problem, saying it doesn't affect all Mojave users, but they do see it. Unfortunately, they also said that all of their efforts are for rewriting the app as 64-bit, and they will not release a patch for this problem. Nor will they give a release date for the 64-bit version.

So, if you scan, be aware!

Hey Miike,

My OS is High Sierra and I got the 64-bit problem window when I upgraded and tried to open Smartscore. I can't import the XML. file from Smartscore into Finale 25. All I get is the staff layout but no notes, chords etc.

Photoscore gave me the 64 bit problem notice and now it won't even open at all.

Do you know of anything I can use to convert a pdf. file into a MusicXML file? I even bought the Smartscores Music to MXL converter separately  and that doesn't work either.

John. I had no problem with High Sierra. Are you trying to go directly from SmartScore into Finale? If so, don't! When you finish your corrections in SmartScore, do a Save As... and select XML. Then, in Finale, use Import > Music XML.

Mike,

That's what I did because as we both know it tries to export to 2012. Anyway, this is what I get when I try to import the xml file from Smartscore. I made other xml files of different pieces of music in Smartscore and got the same window.

John,

if you would, please send me one of the .ENF files, so I can try it at my end. Send it to wawoodman at aol dot com.

I’m going to be out on a job for the next couple of days, but I will look it over.

John -

Check out "PDFtoMUSIC Pro"

Click HERE to go to their website.

This little app will convert a PDF to Music XML - if, and only if the PDF was originally created by most any notation software. I don't know the origin of your PDF files, but if they were originally created (or exported) by any modern notation program, it might be what you need.

It uses the vector based code embedded in the PDF and does basically the same thing that SmartScore would do after the scanning step is completed (the music OCR).

I've had great results - it's pretty accurate - at least as accurate as SmartScore...

There is a free "Pro" demo download that will allow an unlimited number of single pages to be converted to xml. Multiple page scores/parts require a paid license.

Again - if the PDF was created from scanning parts at some point, the vector data is gone and this app won't work.

One additional caveat - this little app is still 32 bit - but should still work in High Sierra and Mojave.

That's not an error but an info screen. You will get that the first time you open any 32 bit app in High Sierra or Mojave. Think of it as Apple's way of saying, 'look for an upgrade or tell the developer to get off the stick'. In any case, that's a one time notice per app.

>This little app will convert a PDF to Music XML - if, and only if the PDF was originally created by most any notation software<

I don't know what circles you hang in but this is very well known, old app and the description is a bit deceptive. It tries to read the underlying fonts. So, it might work if the original file was created in a notation app and exported to pdf. It will not work if the pdf was created by taking a picture of the file and saving that to pdf. Likewise, it doesn't work on copy protected files and has issues with many 3rd party music fonts. I consider it way overpriced for its limited functionality—YMMV.

SmartScore works differently. It scans a picture and converts it to notation, exporting it as .enf or other file types including MusicMXL (SS X2 Pro only).

John Iafrate Are you trying to import MusicXML 3.1? SmartScore does not support this. I have no issue importing .emf or .xml into Finale.

Very good to know. Thanks!

I've not bought my Mojave machine yet but I will keep an external SSD formatted High Sierra just for such things in the immediate future. You can boot from it even if connected USB 2.

Mike, can we get together offline, and you can tell me how that would work? It sounds like a perfect long(er) term solution!

Especially since I still have High Sierra on the old iMac.

I'm at wawoodman at aol dot com, or 206 five two three 9628.
