Shortcuts for Simple Entry not working

So, I'm very new to Finale, but I'm trying to figure out the shortcuts in Simple Entry Mode. I thought that if I hold down a number, like 6, the cursor should change to a half note and then I can play in a note and it would notate that note as a half-note. Then If I hold down the 5 it would change to a quarter note and I can play in a quarter note. But, instead, when I hold down a number, like 6, it just starts rapidly stacking notes on top of each other, not even changing to the right note value. Am I missing something?

BTW, I'm using macOS Sierra with Finale 25.5.0.259

Are you hitting number keys on the keypad, or on the QWERTY keyboard?

What shortcut table are you using?

(Simple menu > Simple Entry Options > Edit Keyboard Shortcuts…)

Laptop or desktop? Are you entering notes from a MIDI keyboard, or the QWERTY keyboard?

If you don’t have an extended keyboard, a USB numberpad will come in very handy. But as Peter asked, which shortcut table are you using?

I’m using a Mac laptop. I’m entering notes through a MIDI keyboard and note values on a QWERTY keyboard. I’m not sure about which shortcut table. I was just trying to follow online tutorials I’ve seen where you use numbers for note values. (E.g. 6 = half note, etc). Thoughts?

To find out, go to

Simple menu > Simple Entry Options > Edit Keyboard Shortcuts…

In the dialog box Edit Keyboard Shortcuts you can see which shortcut table you are using.

You can also choose another shortcut table, or create a new, custom shortcut table.

If you click on the Simple Entry Tool and then click on where it says "Simple" at the top of the screen. It should have "Use Midi device to input" checked. It not, check it. Then click on "Simply Entry Options" and then click "Edit Keyboard Shortcut" and choose "Laptop Shortcut Table" and you should be ready to go.
