Finale 2009 hangs every time

I've been running Finale 2009 on a Mac G5 Powerbook using OS10.5.8 (yes, I know it's ancient!) for several years with no problems. Just recently, every time I try to open Finale, the application just hangs, usually around the time it is looking at the MIDI set up. I've tried reinstalling the software, disconnecting the MOTU interface that's part of the MIDI set up, and removing the Preferences, all without success. So currently I'm completely unable even to open the application.

I'd really appreciate someone's help with this, as I'm not hugely technical and am not sure if this is a computer problem or a software problem. I wouldn't even mind getting a newer computer if I could be sure that my version of Finale would still run on a newer system.

You can be sure that your version of Finale will NOT run on a newer OS.

The only thing I can suggest is that you try a new user account on your computer.

I had a major problem with Finale 2009 after running the demo for 2012 (the first version that had a demo available).

My solution was to do a complete Time Machine restore using a backup date that preceded the 2012 download. Do save any recent work to a flash drive before you do this.

Another good suggestion:

G5s run hot as blazes. There is always the possibility that you're looking at the early stages of a component failure, possibly the hard drive.

Considering the age of the G5, I’m not sure I would consider any component failure as “early.”

True. I was thinking of the signs, not the components. There are reasons that my legacy machine is a G4 and not my old G5.
