Those aren’t exactly rules but, if you follow the steps, it tells us what we need to know—which isn’t enough yet. Now, what steps are you taking when you go to print? You can add screen shots in jpeg or png if it helps us to know. What Brother printer are you using?

Mike, thanks for the help. Following the same steps I have for the last 15 years or so!!! (Print, Score, 2 sided, select range) I'm sure that's not the issue. Brother MFCL2740DW printer. I updated the firmware on the printer this morning to see if that would solve the problem, and checked to make sure it printed out Page docs with no problem.

Direct wireless connection or does it go through a print server? Through a wireless router or switch counts as direct.

Ok. This can be a hard nut to crack since I can’t open Console.app and look. Doing so should identify the breakdown in the process. This can take some time and detective work. That you posted this is intermittent makes me think that something isn’t loading or something else is interfering.

In the meantime, let’s see if we can do. Settings changed for an unknown reason so let’s look at that first.

First, try a Safe Boot. Shut down, boot while pressing the Shift key. Log in when you see your User account. When all of your desktop icons have rebuilt, shut down and reboot normally. This rebuilds paths and sets your caches to default. If you had any alias icons with the generic look, this fixes that, too. See if this fixes the problem.

Technically, an Intel Mac has an NV RAM, not PRAM but it’s really the same thing. If your Mini was made in 2012 or earlier, time to change the battery. A low battery is worse than no battery. Apple uses the high heat BR2032 ($8 on Amazon) but the common CR2032 from the drug store works fine. 

For now, you should be able to print to pdf in the Print menu (this is different in later versions but is still pretty straightforward in 2014.5). Take note where those files are stored. Open those and see if you can print from Preview. Some Brother laser printers have issues with this but that should be a 25/26 issue and 204.5 should print fine—if it prints but the quality is terrible, there’s a workaround for that (again, should be a 25/26 issue)

2011? Yea, it's time to replace that battery anyway. When it gets bad enough, it causes all sorts of problems that are usually misdiagnosed. If I'm going in for any reason after 5 years, I do it as a maintenance item. At 7–9, I'm doing it as the first diagnostic step, quite often the only one.

That takes quite a few steps but an experienced tech can do it quickly. If you ever thought about upgrading the drive, that would also be the time since most of the labor is duplicated. The tools don't cost much at all. If you feel up to the job, get the magnetized drivers like the ones sold at OWC—trust me on that point.
