Running Finale version 26.1.0.397 on Windows 10 with 16 gig memory on an HP Z240.

I used Smart Score  to get a PDF in Finale file format.  It worked well for the most part.  I had to make corrections to the chart with minimum issues.

I am down to the last 2 measures & cannot figure out what is going on.  The time signature is 4/4 cut time.  I have 2 measures side by side that are not correct.

Measure one should show 1 beat rest, 1 best quarter note, 1 beat rest, 1 beat quarter note; instead, Finale shows 1 beat rest, 1 best quarter note, 1 beat rest, 1 beat quarter note plus a 1 beat rest at the end of the measure.  Finale does show the correct time signature.  Finale does not remove the 1 beat rest that appears after the second quarter note. I can click on the hanging measure, but cannot delete it.   I did notice that this hanging 1 beat rest goes with the measure 2 which should show 1 beat rest, two 1/8 notes, two 1 beat quarter notes; instead Finale shows two 1/8 notes, two 1 beat quarter notes.  Finale does not flag measure 1 having 5 beats, nor does it flag measure 2 having 3 beats.

If I execute EDIT>TIME SIGNATURE, Finale does show 4/4 for measures 1 & 2.

Please note these 2 measure are located in middle of the arrangement (i.e. measures 86 & 87 of 152 measures total)

I have no idea how to fix this.

Really appreciate any help!!

Thanks - Steve

It's a pretty safe bet that it's a scanning error. Did you check the .enf file for duration errors before generating the XML?

If there were two layers (voices) in the score, SmartScore will occasionally miscount if there is a leading rest in a measure.

Try selecting a note in the overfilled measure, and using the arrow key to move to the extra note. You may be able to delete it. You could insert two additional blank measures into the score, and copy the correct notes in, or, at worst, enter the notes in the measures manually, then delete the bad ones.

Failing anything else, send me the file at wawoodman at aol dot com, and I'll have a look.

Hi,

I stumbled on this thread when searching for answers to my problem.

I changed 5 bars  of 7/16 into 10 bars of alternating 4/16 and 3/16 bars.

So much harder than doing this in Digital Performer! I could only do it by going from the last 7/16 bar back to the lst. I changed 7/16 to 4/16 for one bar only. That created 2 4/16 bars, the 2nd with the remaining notes of the 7/16 bar. I then gave that 2nd bar a 3/16 signature.

All was well...UNTIL

1. I noticed a flute bar was in 7/16 while the picc and all else in the stack were in 4/16!@!

I fixed that and consider it an anomoly...

2. Worse, when I click in some 3/16 bars I get the message "Too many beats in this bar...Want to delete or move them?"

Since they are rests (so far) I delete them

My questions (less longwinded than the setup!)

1. Is there a global "Check all bars for the right number of beats"

2. Can you tell if there's some speciual instruction I missed in remetering my music?

Burt Goldstein,

You have not told us how (= with what steps) you changed the measures.

Hence we can not try to reproduce the problem.

Did you perhaps use the plug-in Split Measure?

Burt, you mentioned Digital Performer. Are you exporting MusicXML and importing to Finale? If using DP 11, there's an update released today. Among the many bug fixes in DP 11.22 is incorrect MusicXML export.

Hi Mike,

Should I have used XML? I did a simple MIDI export, as I have used for many years.

Hi Peter,

Should I have used Split Measure - I am trying to create additional measures, so I am not sure what split measure does. Does it create a new bar or ...?

My steps:

1. Select Time Signature tool

2. Double- click in a 7/16 measure.

3. In the Number of Beats field, click the down arrow until it shows 4 instead of 7.

4. In Measure Region, click the top option so that uyou are only affecting the current bar.

5. I have tried both Rebar and not, getting better results I think with Rebar checked. Click OK

6. In the subsequent bar that Finale creates, do the same steps to change it to 3/16

… I am not sure what split measure does …

Burt Goldstein,

I think that the Split Measure plug-in can be a help for you.

But I do not know, what you need exactly, for barlines and measure numbers.

Selection Tool.

Drag-select the partial measure (e. g. the last 3 sixteenths of a 7/16 measure).

Then, activate the plug-in.

The plug-in will split a measure into two measures according to the partial measure selection.

You can choose a dashed barline at the split point - but I do not know whether you rather need an invisible barline.

You can have the second partial measure (which now has become a complete, non-partial measure of 3/16) excluded from measure numbering - but I do not know whether you need measure numbers at all.

To see what the Split Measure plug-in has done:

Measure Tool.

Double-click a measure - and take a good look at the Measure Attributes.

Repeat this step for each measure.

You will figure it out.

MOTU has been recommending this for a few years now — MIDI export is limited by comparison. Worst case, it doesn't give you what you need and MIDI will turn out to be better. Digital Performer supports MusicXML 3.0 export. Unfortunately, unlike many DAWs, it does not support MusicXML import.
