Finale v26, PC Windows 10

The symbol you're looking for is more of a mathmatic symbol, rather than a musical symbol. I suspect that if you search through math fonts you'll find it. Finale can use any font you find.

I suppose that the symbol is a double wave line (≈), right?

You can find the ≈ symbol in Unicode text fonts (try e. g. Palatino), in slot #1429 (Unicode keystroke U+2248).

Of course the tradition in music has been to use c. the abbreviation for circa to indicate an approximate tempo, but of course you may have something different in mind.

Musicians generally know what c. = means. I think I’d remember if I ever saw ≈ in a score over the last 50 years. Pretty certain I haven’t nor would I know what it means had I not taken advanced math in school..

Checkout my screenshot below, I find this situation a lot (empty boxes). This is why I'm thinking I haven't downloaded something. Any tips?

Look at the font you selected.

Right, I understand that different symbols will come up depending on whichever font is selected. But if there aren't any more symbols available, why would those boxes be there? As opposed to just omiting empty boxes 126-191

In standard fonts, there are 256 slots available for font characters. There are more available for unicode fonts. But there is no rule that states that every font slot has to be filled, the empty slots just stay empty. They are not deleted. Your download is not missing anything.

Here's the Engraver Time font. There are only 10 slots that are being used in this font and that's perfectly okay.

But what do these empty font slots have to do with your initial question?

I was just thinking that I didn't have all available symbols because some of these slots were empty. Thanks for the info. I'm looking for this symbol, a quick google search told me it should be in Finale Mallet Fonts and I can't seem to find it. 

After rigorous searching to no avail, can anyone tell me what font I can find this symbol under? I found (similar to), but the manuscript is calling for this specifically. Any bites?

It's right on your keyboard. Look at your number keys. On the far right is the equal sign. On the far left is the tilde symbol. Use two separate expressions, with the tilde manually placed above the equal sign. This isn't an elegant solution, but it only took me 30 seconds to figure it out.

It sounds like this is a project you're engraving for a client. Make sure you're charging by the hour if you have to deal with items like this.

Thanks, I guess these workarounds are always available but I feel like this was a relatively rudimental symbol, not something I would make myself. Thanks for the advice.

Check out my screenshot below. The only font labeled Palatino is fully titled Palatino Linotype, and slot #1428 is filled with this symbol that I believe means "symbol not available". This was my original intent for starting this thread. What are your thoughts?

In Palatino,≅ is U+2245 according to Font Book on my Mac. 82 other fonts on my Mac also have this symbol which can be found looking up Math Fonts in the Keyboard Viewer.

Not firing up my Win 7 machine for this.

It is in the Palatino Linotype font on Windows. It's also in the Cambria Math font. Just search for it.

And it may be a rudimentary symbol to you, but it’s not generally used in music. That’s why you aren’t finding it in the music fonts.
