I am using a MacBook (macOS Mohave Version 10.14.6).  Finale Version 26.2.1.464.  (don't laugh...I'm an elementary school teacher in WAAAAY over my head)  I entered my entire score in 3/4 time.  I have realized that it should be in 6/8 time.  I've tried just selecting the whole score and changing the time signature, but that doesn't change the rhythms.  These are the steps I followed:

  1. I entered the beat duration as a dotted quarter note.
  2. I entered the number of beats as 2.  
  3. I checked re-bar music.  
  4. I clicked OK

The problem is that for example, I originally three quarter notes per measure when I really need 6 eighth notes per measure.  When I tried changing the time signature, now I have one quarter note, two tied eighth notes, and then another quarter note.  Is there any way to correct this without having to just re-enter all of the notes?

If you want it all to appear as unbeamed eighth notes, go to the time signature dialogue, and set it up as 6, eighth notes. When you are back in the score, select everything, and go to Edit > Rebeam > to Time Signature.

Obviously two measures of 3/4 should become one measure of 6/8.

 

It can be done, but it takes several steps.

 

1) Utilities menu > Change > Note Durations…

Change all note durations to 50 % of original duration, but de-select the option {Rebar Music}.

Click OK.

Now each 3/4 measure contains only 3 eighths.

 

2) Time signature Tool.

Double-click the first measure.

Number of Beats: 1

Beat Duration: dotted quarter

The time signature will display as 3/8.

Again, de-select {Rebar Music}.

Click OK.

Now each measure is a correct 3/8 measure.

 

That was the easy part.

Now you need to change two 3/8 measures into one 6/8 measure.

3) Are there any rest measures in your score?

If yes, fill each rest measure with a real rest (= a dotted quarter rest).

 

4) Time Signature Tool.

In the dialog box Time Signature, set

Number of Beats: 2

Beat Duration: dotted quarter

The time signature will display as 6/8.

This time, select {Rebar Music}.

Click OK.

 

When you are done, you may have to Rebeam the music (Utilities menu).
