Does it say it wont work with your current version? That’s unusual.

If t says it won’t work with future versions, that’s normal. All 32 bit apps will pop that warning from time to time. Click OK and ignore.

A late 2010 Mac can run High Sierra OS 10.13.

Thanks for the translation. That is an Apple OS error, not Finale. There are a few possibilities but the most likely are a) you never updated to 2014.5 or b) you did update but still have 2014 installed on your system. 2014.5 was a free update that fixed a lot of problems in Sierra but, unlike other updates, it does not overwrite the earlier version of 2014.

If (b), you should have two versions in your Applications older. Open 2014.5 and verify it works, then trash 2014.

If (a) download and install the latest version of 2014 from your MakeMusic account—it will actually be 2014.5. If you now see two copies in your Applications folder, one will be 2014 and the other will be 2014.5. Make certain you open and run 2014.5. After verifying it works, send 2014 to the Trash.

Your Menu Bar alias may point to the wrong version. If you need help with that, let us know.

Thank you for your reply. You were right: I had´t downloaded the 2014.5 version and the reason was the fact, that I wanted to keep a fully and nicely operating system going. Today:

I did as you said: I downloaded the 2014.5 version, put the 2014 into Trash (I did´t empty it) and also shot down the iMac, restarted it, but the consequence was the same:

"Finale 2014.5 can not be opened because of a problem. Check for the developer, that Finale 2014.5 works with this macOS version."

I actually don´t know, what to do. I had´t made any changes to either iMac of Finale, but now all my (1500) files are stuck.

The last time Finale worked nicely was 14.4.2020, then I had a months break, actually because of corona. I´ve had mine.

I hope You would have an idea of what I could do.

I don´t know what you did, but macOS pushed me an update. It worked, and for now, everything is alright.

Actually, my greatest concern is: how could I keep this machine going. This combination, Finale/iMac, works well.

The possibilities of Finale 2014.5, as now, are enough for me, I know how to handle it, and I have read the handbook!! 800 pages! Part 2.

I am glad to learn what the Mac OS numbers mean, but I am primarily a Windows user and only know the OS's for my Mac by their "geographical" names. So knowing whether you are using Catalina or High Sierra would be helpful to me.

I used to be a school teacher, so it takes a lot to insult me. :-)

I remembered later on, that dates are written in a different order than in Europe. The american way (Y,M,D,H,M,S) is more logical than ours (D,M,Y,H,M,S.). 

I was tired; it was far past midnight here in Finland.

The good thing is, that the problem was solved. I´m still surprised, how someone from Apple(?) could nearly force my Mac to be updated and restarted. I´m still running the same OS 10.12.6 as before. What happened? A bit scaring, too.

Mike wrote, that late 10 could run 10.13, but as far as I know, from Apples pages, I can´t find 10.13 update.

I'm happy to give a complete answer — but not today. Tomorrow or Sunday, I promise. The late 2009–10 iMac is unique in a few aspects.

I have five churches waiting on service music for Sunday. I work for only two of them but these are interesting times and we're pooling resources Still, deadlines don't move. Providing church music online takes a tremendous amount of time. Beats binge watching TV.

Ok, I'll try to be concise but am making no promises...

As for 2014.5 over High Sierra, I don't recommend it. Human Playback will crash the app—not might, will. There are two other scenarios that will also crash 2014.5 but I don't recall them.

High Sierra (HS) wants to run over APFS — the OS 10.13.6 will re-format your drive as part of the installation process. There are many advantages to this if you have an SSD (Solid State Drive) but not so many If you have an HDD (mechanical Hard Disk Drive). If you have already installed an SSD and don't mind the limitations of 2014.5 over HS, the upgrade is well worth it in my opinion if for no other reasons than having APFS Snapshots. http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=64689

If your 2010 has its original SSD, it's time to upgrade to an SSD or a newer Mac. I'm an experienced Mac tech and have serviced hundreds of these machines for local schools. Not one of those HDDs is still good—even if still working. In addition, the BR2032 NV RAM battery is very close to being expired and, when that happens, it's not good. Battery problems show up as bad GPUs and a lot of money is spent chasing video problems because the user (and often the tech) doesn't know that replacing with an inexpensive CR2032 battery would have prevented the problem.

HS is the last OS that runs on a 2011 or older Mac. Installing an SSD will make the machine a lot faster (about 4x overall) but that's still much slower (1/8 overall) than the slowest 2017 or newer iMac. Although the following will look like a recommendation to upgrade your 2010, I really recommend replacing it with something newer. A 2017 and SSD based (not Hybrid) is the oldest iMac I can recommend for Finale. If you already owned a 2015, I could recommend an inexpensive way to turn it into a 2017 with Thunderbolt 2 (about 3.5x faster than the way it came from Apple). 

If the 2011 iMac is the easiest to replace the HDD, the late 2009–10 is the most time consuming. Unlike other iMacs before and since, the motherboard must be removed to replace the NV RAM battery. Other years, an experienced tech can do the job in 15 minutes (I take 20 because I have only one working arm). The 2009–10 takes about an hour for an experienced tech and a lot longer for the inexperienced. There are sites and videos on how to do the job — if you want to tackle it yourself, I have links and a couple of tips that ensure you only have to do the job once. I also know the parts you'll need and tools if you want to do it yourself.

Besides speed and reliability, the other reason to replace the internal HDD is to reduce the heat. When I did mine 5 years ago (when the cost was much, much higher), I calculated that the energy savings paid for the upgrade in less than a year.

APFS sounds like a lot of work, and it could be worth while, but.. Thank you for the warnings, too. I don´t want any craches, I use quite a lot Human Playbacks.

Can my HDD be changed to SSD? Would it be worth while?

The Finale files are not very large. Does it really have such a big difference if the disk is HDD or SSD? (I know, SSD:s are and they start far faster, and they have memory capacity that is nearly eternal.)

(When I bought a new HDD memory to my first Mac, LC II, it was 1G. (I had previously 80M) I counted, that 1G would last for my lifetime, because the musical files are so small. And actually it nearly would have, too.)

I have to quit. My iMac is too hot. I have to do something.... maybe new Mac?

I already said yes. You will need an SSD, a temperature sensor, a CR2032 battery a bracket (optional but recommended). If doing it yourself, you'll need a few tools and a few hours. If not, it will take someone an hour not including the data transfer.

No one can answer this except you. If you intend to keep it longer, then yes. If you intend to replace it, then no. A 2010 with its original HDD and battery will break down but I can't tell you when.

I've already told you that replacing the HDD and doing it properly will make your 2010 run much cooler. A new iMac would be better still. I installed an SSD into my 2010 five years ago but replaced it last year.

Sorry, I´m not aquatinted with the mechanics; I just use Macs. That was the reason, in 1990`s to choose Mac. The other option, at that time, was Atari. They had the best music programs. Atari turned later to games.
