Mac Mini – Mojave 10.14.6

I updated my Finale 26 to the latest (26.2) recently. Everything was fine at first, but now every time I open the program, within a minute (or seconds) it freezes the cursor (sometimes with a blockiness around the cursor), bringing the whole machine to its knees. Sometimes I can "Hide Finale," regaining control of the cursor, and Force-Quitting Finalle – but more often I have to shut down the whole computer to regain control of it. I've gone back not only to the first v. 26, but Finale 25.

I did the bit suggested in the Help, removing a preference file and restarting. No cigar. If anything the problem's getting worse.

Since MakeMusic Help is compromised by viral/social factors, I'm on my own for the moment. Has anyone seen this strange, and highly destructive behavior in Finale 26.2?

I'm inclined to rip Finale 26 totally out of the machine as best I can, since sometimes I inadvertently launch it and the house falls down.

Best wishes –

Fred

It sounds like there is a conflict between F26 and something else on the computer. You might try setting up a new user account on the Mac, and just install Finale into that. If it works, that tells you something else may be the problem.

If you didn’t reboot after installing, do that now and see if you still have a problem. Moving on...

If you wait long enough, do you get a crash report? If so, send it to MM Support via the Submit a request link at the top of this page.

You have a conflict or something missing. If something’s missing, reinstalling 26.2 will fix it.

If there’s a conflict, it must be found and resolved. Apple Support for this is free. You want a tech logging onto your Mini in real time and looking at Console.app or a diagnostic tool that they will install for the session. Contact Apple through the Support pages and schedule a tech to call you back. Because it’s repeatable, they may find the problem on the first try. You can schedule this call on weekends — Apple normally gets back in 10 minutes or so. They won’t support Finale, of course but that’s not what you need. You want to know what’s causing your machine to freeze. Finale is the symptom but is probably not the problem. I’d reinstall 26.2 and reboot first. Cal Apple if you still get a freeze.

I’m having the exact same problem with Logic 10.15.1 on my Catalina test machine. If I revert to 10.15.0 via Time Machine (takes 45 seconds on my MacBoob Pro), it fires up with no problem. Update again to .1 and my MBP freezes. I’m an experienced Mac tech and may find the problem in Console.app... If not, I’m not proud and will have Apple look at it. Fortunately for me, Logic is not my primary DAW and my work machine is an iMac Pro where the upgrade worked without issue.

In March, I had a similar issue on my iMP after the recent Mojave Security Update. The problem was a PACE library that supported OS 10.6–10.7. Removing it affected nothing — except that my iMac Pro stopped crashing. That took two weeks for Apple to find—the crash reports had to go to Engineering to find that conflict. Frustrating? Yes. Apple’s fault? No. Could I have solved it without their help? I don’t know but it’s solved now and I am grateful.
