I am composing/inputting lyrics into the music.  The stems are too high. I have tried doing what the manual states.  It only changes the stem length itself but leaves the beam.  How do I shorten a group of 4 beamed eighth notes so they don't bleed into the lyrics? (Incidentally, I have already moved the lyrics as far as I can.) I have read the Stem Length behaviour and was even more confused. 

I have a MAC Mojave and latest version of Finale!

Hi Gary - try this:

Using the Special Tools tool - select the Beam Angle Tool in the Special Tools palette. Then - click on the first note of your beam group.  Two boxes (handles) will appear. Click in the left most box to adjust all stems (and beams) vertically in the selected beam group. Drag this box up or down to desired position.  All stems in beam group will be adjusted.

The other box adjusts the beam angle - and corrects all stems in the group if/when you change the beam angle.

Or you could move the staves farther apart.

The JW Change plugin allows to change the vertical position of beams and the length of stems.
