Hi - I've been doing RNA harmonic analysis, and Finale Numerics gives me everything I've needed so far - everything except the bracket for connecting a cadential 64 to V. I've been making do with using a regular straight double-ended bracket and just putting a V below it but I really want to be able to put the correct bracket under it. I've tried using other RNA/fig bass fonts, but I can't find it in those fonts either. I tried creating one in Smart Shapes but it was a miserable failure.

Surely someone else uses those brackets, right?

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

It's been a long time since I did harmonic analysis, but my recollection Walter Piston was that I 6/4 resolved to V even though the I 6/4 certainly could (under the context you give ) suggest a dominant function. The bracketing is something I am unfamiliar with. (Perhaps brackets had not been invented when I studied harmony, or the brackets were obscured by dust from a passing dinosaur.)

 

Edit: On looking at Piston (trying not to let the pages crumble) I see some use of braces, but they were vertical rather than horizontal.

I am not a well-trained musician. (Heck, I’m barely housebroken.) 

What is the purpose of Harmonic Analysis? Does a composer sit down with a structural blueprint, and populate It with notes? Or do they write a piece of music that sounds nice (to them, at least) and then other people analyze it to figure out, why?

Yes, that is the purpose.

Also, Harmonic Analysis can be used as a tool in music theory lessons.

Thanks! I was actually talking about the bracket itself. This is an exercise from a textbook that I was using as an example of the bracket - this is not my own analysis. I'm just wondering why, considering that I see the bracket so much in analysis that I see, and especially in the Kostya book that is a standard textbook for tonal harmony, that it is not included in fonts used for harmonic/Roman numeral analysis. There are so many obscure, strange and esoteric symbols in some of these special fonts, you'd think it would be included.
