I have seen it notated in several ways, and I am not sure which notation you need.

What I have in mind is to show a series of whole notes each measure to indicate the preferred scale, perhaps with some notes in parentheses to indicate avoided tones. So, the "number of beats" would have to be disconnected from the time signature.

There are several ways to get what you want, try them to see if they work :

• define a time signature of 7/1 (and hide it)

• remain in 4/4 (or whatever), don't select "Jump to Next Measure", overfill the measure with whole notes, and in the Measure Tool, space the notes evenly

• use tuplets (7 whole notes in the space of 1) and hide the bracket and the number.

The tuplet method seemed to work best for me.  I could enter the scale without confusing what was going on elsewhere in the score.  Thanks.

Since the meaning seems to be to only indicate the notes in a scale (without note durations ), you might also hide the stems for a cleaner look:

JW Change Plug-In > Stems > Visibility > Hide > Apply

If you want hollow note heads (although I think filled looks best and is easiest to read) you can change it here:

Utilities > Change > Noteheads > All/  or Filled > Hollow

Scale indications are fine, but I see no chord symbols???

My guess is that at least some soloists would prefer to see, not only scale indications, but also chord symbols.

That's right, and in some cases, the name of the scale or mode (ex. C lydian, A mel min, etc...)

Sorry, I didn't copy the key signature in the image.  I'm trying to make things as clear as possible for the soloists.  If I spell out the full chords, there will be a lot of #9s and #11s.  If I don't spell out the altered chords, most people would make incorrect assumptions about the underlying scales.  Spelling out the scales/modes (Double harmonic and Lydian #2 #6) doesn't feel all that informative either.  I'm thinking it might be best to just show the scales and leave off any chord symbols.  The JW plug-in was useful.

For s soloist who is supposed to improvise a solo (= does not have a “written out” solo), the chord symbols can give a deeper insight in the accompaniment played during the solo.
