I have no trouble doing this. Please list the exact steps you're trying.

1. Select Time Signature Tool.

2. Double click on staff

3. In Time Signature menu, select Beat Duration = 16

4. Attempt to change Number of Beats to 11.  Menu skips from 12 to 9.

5. Attempt Composite of 3/8 + 5/16

6. Check "Use A Different Time Signature for Display".  Same thing happens in lower field. Can't get it to display 11/16.

"Abbreviate" check box is greyed out.

Found it. There is more than one Beat Duration = 16 in the scrolling options, the durations are not listed in order. Bit of a design flaw, I'd say.

Try this:

1) Set the Number of Beats to 1 (only one).

2) Now, scroll through the Beat Duration options, and you will see something special where the Beat Duration is a dotted note:

The number in the time signature’s “denominator” displays a value ⅓ of the Beat Duration.

When the Beat Duration is a Dotted Half, the “denominator” displays 4.

When the Beat Duration is a Dotted Quarter, the “denominator” displays 8.

When the Beat Duration is a Dotted Eighth, the “denominator” displays 16.
