From time to time, musical symbols such as noteheads, clefs, and accidentals may be replaced by incorrect symbols. You may see question marks or odd looking symbols in place of the musical characters that should be in your music.

This happens when Finale cannot locate the MakeMusic fonts on your computer. While this can happen for a number of reasons, it is often fixed by simply reinstalling the MakeMusic Font pack.

To Install the MakeMusic FontPack:

  1. Quit Finale. Download the attached file for your platform at the bottom of this article —
    MakeMusicFontsTT.pkg (Mac) or MMFonts.msi (Windows).
  2. If your browser prompts you, choose to Save this file.
  3. Once the download has finished, double-click the FontPack to reinstall your fonts.
Mac users may need to adjust their System Preferences if the font pack installer is blocked by Security & Privacy.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Launch Finale to check to see if the display problems are gone (If your fonts are still not displaying correctly please proceed to the OS-specific steps below)

  1. On your keyboard, hold the Windows key and press the letter R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type or paste C:\Windows\Fonts and click OK.

Font display issues in Finale for Mac may happen if one of more MakeMusic fonts are disabled. In other cases, the fonts may be enabled, but a duplicate copy of the font may also be enabled. You can address both of these issues using the Mac OS application Font Book, located in the Applications folder.

  1. Quit Finale.
  2. Launch Font Book.
  3. Look for any MakeMusic fonts. If any fonts are deactivated, their names will appear gray and will be followed by the word Off.

MakeMusic's font installer has been updated to match the fonts installed with Finale v27.0. This includes both newer SMuFL fonts and also legacy fonts. Although, Finale versions prior to v27 are not able to take full advantage of SMuFL fonts, users experiencing font issues with previous versions should still use this installer. These fonts can be installed on the same computer and not cause any issues with older versions.
