I reformatted my mini 6,1 HN for two separate volumes, my original one (OS10.8 and Finale '14) and a second one (OS10.11, for Final Cut Pro X). The large share of apps (including Final '14) are on the original 10.8 volume, and they start up from the 10.11 volume with possibly only a repeat of the registration and SN. Final bails out during the splash screen. Does this mean that it considers the operation of v14 from the new volume, operating a new copy requiring the deactivation of an existing copy.

Finale on this machine is still being run by one copy (the 10.8 volume). It just happens to be run by a different OS on a different volume on this same machine. And by definition, both volumes will never be booted up simultaneously (and this able to run that one copy simultaneously).

Has anyone ever done this before? What are the rules on this?

Finale 2014.3.4736 • (on this volume) 10.11.6

You are permitted to have 2 installs of Finale, so you can install it on both volumes. You seem to be saying that Finale is not installed on your OS10.11 volume, but you're attempting to start it up there. That probably won't work.

I have my 2 installs: one on the OS10.8 volume, and the other on a second machine (a laptop, which also has dual OSs).

I'm halfway between OSs on both these machines, in terms of which OS would be the everyday one for use with all my regular apps. At this point, it's 10.8 (which has legacy apps that 10.11 can't run). If I can turn up enough apps resident in 10.8 which I can boot up from the 10.11 volume (hopefully including Finale), I might not have to chose between OSs.

Last night I was working with a music video clip in FCPX, when I heard a phrase that didn't sound right. I would have loved to open up the score to confirm the musical error, but it was unavailable without rebooting in 10.8 and opening up Finale.

You shouldn't have a problem installing Finale on two volumes of the same drive—I never have.

Installing on two different drives is treated as two installs, however. I learned that 10 or so years ago on my G5. I had to swap drive bays to deactivate my license so that I could activate it on the new drive.

To piggyback on Bruce's comment, make sure you're downloading the DMG and running the installer again on the 10.11 volume. I realize that's probably old news, but I've seen very strange things happen when folks try to manually copy "Finale.app" to another location!

Thanks to all. This appears to work, although with the install on 10.11 volume I had to go through an initial registration. But the 10.8 install was still authorized. So maybe this will work on my orphaned legacy audio editor Peak Studio 7. Fingers crossed.

@Chad, my earlier attempted access was simply double clicking the 10.8's Application Folder (available to any accounts on that volume). And, yes the only legit install uses the install disc.

And furthermore, this Forum software REALLY SUCKS.

You're welcome. I figured that the MM license manager hasn't changed. Thanks for confirming that.

Maybe, maybe not. It depends how the license manager works. If it uses a hardware ID or MAC address, then it should, same as Finale. You can email Steve Berkeley if you can find him. Even though BIAS is dead, he still maintains the BIAS license server. He is selling Sound Soap as a stand-alone product but it is now being distributed by Antares (AutoTune etc.). I have no idea if Mr. Berkeley can be emailed through Soundness anymore. Here's the last I read about it:

No argument there. However, that plus a buck and sales tax gets you a cup of coffee at McDonalds.

This is definitely off topic (and this Forum deserves it… …Social Media, BFF), but thanks for the contemporaneous chatter. I started off with Peak 2.6.2 (student edition), bought in (retail) at 5.2, and fell for the Peak Studio 7 several, months before they closed shop. But I've been able to move my installation around, right along. The last one was back in March, and among three machines, I've got my two installation of 5.2 and 7. I'll probably try installing 7 on this machine, but would wouldn't ask any favors from the poor guy. Kinda of like bringing up a child-support issue, a few years after a tooth-and-nail divorce <G>
